I am truly sorry I missed your reply. I do of course agree with you that there are more than enough for all of those interested in the coinage of Domitian. The more the merrier! As to my coin you are quite right, it is a fantastic coin in hand. In the last year since you started this thread the coin looks even nicer. I am so glad I invested in the Abafil trays. Many of my coins have taken on some beautiful toning. Again please accept my apologies I was not being intentionally rude. Have you added any nice Domitian's recently?
A recent pick-up(much greener in hand): Domitian. AD 81-96. Æ As Rome mint. 29mm. 13.19g. Struck AD 86. O: Laureate bust right, wearing aegis. R: Moneta standing left, holding scales and cornucopia. RIC II.1 493
Unfortunately not. Few Domitians have appeared in recent months that both meet my needs and are within my budget. I'm actually still waiting for an affordable denarius from 85 or 84. My last Domitian: Domitian 81-96 AR Denarius Struck 88-89 AD IMP CAES DOMIT AVG - GERM P M TR P VIII laureate head right. COS XIIII LVD SAEC FEC herald with feather in cap walking left, holding round shield and wand. 3,28g/18,5mm Ric 596 (C2)
Good luck on the denarii from 84 or 85. I am still looking for one from 84 myself. They do not appear very often at all. I have been looking for 3-4 years for one. As for 85, yeah I have a number of these but with the uptick in interest in the last year along with a sharp rise in prices, makes these difficult to capture as well. BTW that is a nice D596. I have a couple of these but these days they get snapped up really quickly.
I am interested to see how your new focus on Domitian goes - I don't think his coins are boring at all and I enjoy looking at them. There are a few Domitians in my collection, low grade. I wasn't sure if I had any from 86 A.D., so I looked and found two: Domitian Æ Dupondius (86 A.D.) Rome Mint IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM COS XII CENS [PER PP], radiate head right / S-C, Mars walking left, holding Victory and trophy. RIC 482; Cohen 432. (10.74 grams / 28 mm) Domitian Æ As (86 A.D.) Rome Mint IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM • COS XII C[ENS PER P P], laureate bust right with aegis / FIDEI [PVBLICAE]S-C, Fides standing right holding ears of grain and basket of fruit. RIC 486; RCV 2804. (10.81 grams / 26 mm)
My favorite and probably best Domitian portrait is a young-portrait. The same reverse motif was also used on a denarius type and an aureus.
De-slabbed 86 and a few of my favorites. Domitian AR denarius, Rome Mint. 86 AD. Obv: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM PM TRP VIII, laureate head right. Rev: IMP XIX COS XIIII CENS PPP, Minerva walking right, wielding a spear and holding shield on left arm. Cappadocia, Uncertain Flavian mint. Domitian AE22. Syria, Antioch. Domitian AE15. Winged caduceus Obv: IMP DOMITIANVS, laureate head of Domitian left. Rev: CAES AVG GERMANICVS, Winged caduceus. RPC 2025, BMCRE 521, rare. Thrace, Philippopolis. Domitian AE22. Ares Obv: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM COS XIIII CENS PERP P, radiate head right. Rev: ΦIΛIΠΠOΠOΛITΩN, Ares, in full armor, stg. l. with shield at his feet.
