I'm truly thinking of burying it all....

Have you considered getting them appraised by a local dealer? You know - why you're still alive? Will cost a few bucks but at least YOU'LL have an idea.
I don't know what all your collection entails but from the sound of it there's a lot of TPGd stuff but perhaps NOT stuff that will thrill a dealer too much. I work in a shop and what YOU may think is worth X amount is NOT to the dealer because they have to move it. They may also have 50 sets of that same set or item. Slabbed or not it's supply and demand.
Walk into our shop with a bunch of PR69 silver state quarters it's no biggie to us. We'll go low because we really don't WANT it. Walk in with an XF45 SVDB Lincolon in a PCGS holder. We WANT it so we pay much more.
Will you (your wife) get what you paid for it? Extremely doubtful. I have some coins that will gain a nice profit while many others will be a loss. It's how it works. What would you gain? Nothing because I reckon you'd be six feet under but your wife could gain a few bucks. The bonus? Eventually your coins will work their way into collector's hands that actually want them.
Sure, I know enough people that my wife will get a decent amount from my coins. SHE'S the one I'm giving them to but she also knows I want them to end up in serious collector's hands. I know they will.

Well, the best way to take it with you is this:
Have 2 Fifty Dollar bullion gold pieces, put over your eyes to pay the tiller-man on the River Styx.
If this does not work, gold does not rot, sooo perhaps 3,000 years from now, some kid with a metal detector will find you and the coins. make someone happy, fer sure.

Alot of good suggestions....But trading the kids and wife? Anyway, I got out my hoard (mini by other's ) and took a few pictures.

I apologize for the quality as I had to use my cell-phone, but I think it didnt turn out so bad. I tried to upload them here, but they are .bmp and it wont let me change the format. So I posted one picture on imageshack, and if this works, I will post some more.....So this is more of a test..

There are some interesting coins here....

On the Far left side, you will see 2 ziplocs of 2 Full-Set Silver proof Quarters.
The coin rolls you see are ALL Ch. BU Lincolns from 1954-2009 , only a few are duplicates. Just need 6 rolls to have a complete set.
The graded coins are mostly lincolns..
If you look up top left, you will see commerative coins...
    1. Is the painted Silver Dollar (that is the only coin given to me)
    2. 1993 Thomas Jefferson Proof - paid $21.00
    3. 2005? Ben Franklin Proof - paid $29
    4. 1983 Maple Silver Dollar in Proof - First ever Maple proof Dollar in a geniune maple box.kinda neat.. These arent cheap...

Top Right - about 40 Silver Dollars - 2009 Bullion Eagles and Peace Dollars- Morgan Dollars - Maple Leaf Dollar bullion (beautiful coins btw) and Mexican Silver Bullion, very nice..
The certified coins are 99% NGC or PCGS - mostly Lincolns...
I do have a box of 1999 Silver proof quarters, Clad proof,BU coins of 1999.
I have a few walkers, franklins,1950-d nickel, louis braille silver dollar...

On the right, you see loose coins in airtights, have 1875 quarter, a few FRANKLINS, 1878 dime? , 1941 mercury dime, about 7 proof IKe's

And of course in the middle is the Lincoln Chronicle Set.....

Let me know what you think this hoard is worth? I would be interested to know what you think......If you have questions ask.....

Here are a few more pics, I hope these are bigger...

Hi All, I have been gathering the needed items to bury my collection. I ordered these...
    http://www.target.com/gp/detail.htm...110944&ci_sku=B000KA33Q8&ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001

I also went to home depot and got these to wrap the boxes in. I also decided to wrap the boxes, coins with these bags before I put them inside the boxes. Once that is done, I decided to wrap the boxes 2 times with these .,
    http://www.homedepot.com/Bath-Clean...splay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

Which is 4 mil thick bags... I have everything ready and will take pics soon, a step by step. But I need to wait for maybe a month or 2 for the ground to un-freeze. This may be until May, but it will happen. I am to intrigued with a buried treasure. From my reciepts, I have over $6,000.00 in this hoard. I also have plenty of dessicant bags to add. I would not do this if I thought the coins would be ruined, but I am confident, they will be just fine.
    Anyone have any other suggestions?..

Suggest that you put the collection in the hands of a coin dealer and just walk away.

I think you are being very selfish with these items, especially as they are items that others would gladly welcome or seek to add to their collections, whether given to them by your own personal charity or if you were to sell the collection in parts via auctions or in whole to a dealer.

If you are going to bury something of value, perhaps you should sell everything in your collection so that they stay available to collectors and invest all the proceeds you raised in as many bars of precious metals you can acquire, then bury that instead. It will be A LOT easier to dig a smaller hole, it will be less you need to attempt to entomb and you will find it very difficult to damage the bars compared to the massive destruction and reduction in value you will cause your collection by burying that bulk.

I seriously think if you are this intent on this behavior that you truly need to be separated from these items before you do any damage by this novice burial concept you've proposed.

You are wasting your time and money on the materials you've so far disclosed that you will use as they will fail to preserve your items in the earth, and in very short order. You clearly misunderstand the effects of what entombment alone can and will do based on your approach and the environment you will place them in, below ground. How deep will you bury them and at what depth will you know that you need a structure (other than those tubs) to stave off the crushing effects of the weight of the dirt you pack back on top of the hole. You also seem to misunderstand how dissectants in this scenario will work against you, more than likely casuing moisture to seek out your items rather than keep the space within your boxes free of moisture. They will soak up moisture and accelerate damage in short order, especially if you are burying these coins in Spring when everything is wet. Once any moisture gets in/around all that plastic you intend to use, the materials will hold the moisture and it will never dry. You have also mentioned that the ground is currently frozen, what will you do to prevent frost and freezing from causing it's effects? Do you know how deep your frost line is and how much further you should go to be totally free of that? But what then of the water table?

'About Good' is hardly the condition of the items that you are bound to get back out of this grave you are designing for your collection.

I agree with others in that you should not bury them. If I was in this situation, I'd find some younger collectors (perhaps through a way of a local club) and hand some out to them.

Might as well crack them out and spend them. Eventually, they will find their way into collectors hands. Granted, they will be lower grade due to circulation, but they'll be in better condition that way then when they are unearthed from your yard.

Or, send them to me....I promise I won't flip 'em!

Why so bitter? I can understand not wanting some scum bag dealer buying it for nothing, but surely there is someone deserving. If you donate, try not to think about the benefit to you, think about the benefit to the deserving charity.

I think many of us have a similar story. Mine is an AU 1917 Liberty Standing quarter that I hid from potential thieves...and myself about forty years ago. It has never been rediscovered.

I'm just starting out in the coin collecting hobby.
I just don't know about removing all those coins from possible collection.
If they were all in a place for exhibit that is one thing, removing them from exhibit and collection, that is something else entirely.
    Hope you reconsider this move.

I remember reading about this when you originally posted.

You're 'guessing' that they will 'all' be fine. Why didn't you try a test 5 years ago? At this point, if you absolutely have to do it, I would do a test run and bury each type of slab, each type of coin, air-tites, MS, proof, mint set, etc.., without jumping in and burying it all. Give it AT LEAST one year and see how everything fares. If they go to hell in one year, then you'll know it's a bad idea. Bury anything you're willing to sacrifice for the test. If what you do is inadequate and ends up turning everything into garbage and devaluing it, you just wasted a bunch of money and a whole lot of time and good coins.

Dessicant packs will be worthless in a month if the container isn't completely air tight and even then, they will likely be exhausted as time goes on and the container sweats inside. I don't care how large they are. I use silica gel that is 30x what I need and it still needs to be recharged twice a year in an oven. And thats indoor use!

I enjoy your ambition but I hope another perspective can help you think twice about this. Good luck with whatever you do.

If you're at this point, I'd personally come up with a compromise. Maybe bury some to satisfy that desire and sell the rest and enjoy the money. Really, why not?

OK, I have been thinking more about this for a month or so since I last posted. My main concern is that the collection/hoard does not deteriate/or corrode.:crying:

Other than that, why not? Who doesnt want a hoard protected by earth?
Yes, I am cheap in I don't want to pay for a safe deposit box, they should be free to customers....Yes, make the vault bigger..!!

I saw a book once (can't remember the name) (and didnt buy it) about the author going around the US and burying items. And these were pretty decent things. Rings, Jewelery, etc... And people did report back finding these things, and were quite excited about it.

His items were not that expensive (if I remember correct) maybe $500.00 for the best item. But he put in his book clues, maps, etc....

LOL, I am thinking I could write a book....But with my luck, someone would figure it out in a month, and be set up in my backyard with flood lights and a backhoe ready to dig.......LMAO.!!

So what to do? I don't really know, I want a TRUE collector, a purist, a long time collector. Someone who couldn't afford everything they saw to buy when growing up. I didn't have 2 nickels to rub together when I was growing up. After years of hard work and education... I happened to have some great ideas in my 30's which allowed me to capitolize on the internet.

I am not a millionaire, but I am well off., And I do love coins... But not as much as a woman, LOL..!! I never lost my focus there. Anyway. I probably wont bury it all., maybe a box, But I am the type of guy who likes to go for it all or nothing.....

But I won't compromise ruining the collection for any ego or idea...So for now, I don't know...

    thanks for reading.....
