Welcome to the CoinTalk Ancients Forum @asheland ! (CTAF). @lordmarcovan is a Master of Numismatic Eclectica and has a fascinating collecting style. He rings out the old to make way for the ancient .
Not my favorite Liberty coin design. I think the mint blew it by making the row of stars in her diadem too big. Almost looks as goofy as if they had shosen to depict her with oversized Mickey Mouse ears. If they had gone with smaller stars (as the Statue of Freedom which inspired this design) then I think it would have turned out fantastic. All they had to do was make the stars 30% smaller.
Hi @asheland , glad you could make your way over - @lordmarcovan and @Aethelred brought me here just over a year ago. At the time I was into US Coins and dipping my toe into some world, but now I'm all ancients! Here's a bit of all three for you:
Glad you finally made it over here, Terry. Unlike CU, there's a General Discussion forum for when you want to post those special non-numismatic purchases. Tell 'em about the bird-back spoon cherrypick, and stuff like that. @dadams, you were discussed in our recent gathering and we wished you could be there. @Mark Metzger, you came up, too.
I thought my ears were burning! I've been so happy with the helpful community at Coin Talk. The forum as a whole (with special thanks to @lordmarcovan and @Aethelred) has really served as a catalyst for my son and I and our growing collection.
That's a beautiful coin @green18 ! I must confess that I'm still considering purchasing one of the silver “Black Lady Liberty” coins.
Sallent, great post! And thank you everybody for the warm welcome! I'm just starting to understand the format here and how to reply to specific posts. I am a type collector more than anything I suppose. US, British and Mexican being my favorites. I like Canadian, and German States too somewhat. I am also into poured bars and generally collect silver bullion. I like the older JM and Engelhard bars also.
