I never saw it as a popularity contest either since the very first thread I started after joining here was a TOTW... maybe it was my second thread as I did a 7th post giveaway which might have been my first ;) That's the thread that I started to gain popularity!!! :p

Charmy told me to join here and make that TOTW post of my 1908-S IHC set though, so she gets some of the credit ;)

Some won TOTW honors, and some didn't. The biggest plus was that it kept people trying to write good, solid, and informative threads.

I tried many times but never quite grabbed the brass ring. But it kept me trying...

First off Lehigh, let me start off by saying that i agree with you 100% when it comes to the TOTW. I will go into more detail in a second.
I do however take offence to the comment about newer members not being able to contribute the way some of you senior memebers have. I would love to be able to posts some informatve threads the way you, Charmy, Snaz, Tmoney and many others have but I just do not have the knowledge yet to do so. The key word there is yet. I am learning every day from all of you and from the numerous books I have read since I started collecting. One day I will be able to put into this forum as much as I am taking out but untl that day comes, I guess I will have to remain a burden on the back of CT like all the other new members. (At least that is what it sounded like in your post). Dont group all newbies together as one.
I understand that a lot of you were very pasionate about the TOTW feature and I was not around at the time but I can completely understand why. Sometimes in life, when you do something that you spend a lot of time doing and put a lot of hard work inti, just knowing that someone appreciated it and you get a pat on the back means more than getting paid or a prize for doing so. I understand that when all you senior members right these threads that there are years of studying and learning and a lot of time spent writing these not for your benefit,( yall already know what your writing about), but for the benefit of others.
I think it is great that there was a place were people could nominate an informative post were you learned something that you didnt know or maybe got to look at something from a differant angle. I have nominated a few threads like that for me since I have joined with this new way Doug has made.
I also like the fact that these awesome threads are easily accesible because the honest truth is that people in todays society are lazy and will not take the extra time to search for something but will read it if it right under there noise.
I am sorry that this was so long ut I had to let you know Lehigh how you comment sounded to the rest of us newbies but the main reason was to tell you senior members Thank You for taking the time to post these threads with all this information that people like me can go for free and learn about the hobby we are all so passionate about.

    Heath,

Make no mistake, my comments were directed squarely at Pinkelton, not at newbies in general.

And I have no doubt given your passion level for this hobby that in short order, you will become the teacher.:smile

Not at all, you see I don't mind doing the work, I enjoy it. What I am complaining about is that people asked for something - I gave it to them. Then when they got it they didn't, or wouldn't, use it.

And for the record, if I want to complain about something - I can. Everybody else does, and they do it all the time. Every day I get complaints about this or about that. People post complaints on daily basis. They are allowed to do that because they are members. Well, I'm a member too. So I want to complain, I will ;)

No it isn't the same, never claimed it would be. But it is the best I can offer. What you are suggesting is like the guy who wants a brand new car, for free. Somebody gives him the car for free, then when he gets it he says - oh crap, I wanted a blue one ! :crying: And walks away leaving the car behind.

Uhhhhhh - apparently none of you have noticed, but all of those great threads that you have all been lamenting about - guess what ? They're all still there, every single one. And they are all still located in 1 single place, the - Announcements - section. Complete with links, the number of nominations - everything. It's all still there right where it was to begin with.

What you are complaining about is that you can't vote for them anymore by clicking a button. That's it, that's the only thing that is any different. Well :crying: :crying: Shall I call the waaaahmbulance ?

I mean c'mon people, you wanted a way to be able to recognize somebody's good work. You have it. You wanted a way for all those great posts to be located in one spot right at the top of the page where anybody can see them easily and find them at any time. You have it.

The only thing I cannot give you is the ability to vote for those posts by clicking a button. That is the only difference. I'd love to give it to you, so would Peter. But we can't. Is the ease of clicking on a button so damn important when you can have everything else you want ?

And if you want a Hall of Fame, I can give that to you too. I'll just create another thread with the Hall of Fame Winners in it. But before I can do that, we have to have enough winners to choose the best from.

That requires your participation ! Just like it did the last time. Only this time, you have to spend 15 or 20 seconds sending me a PM.

So c'mon, continue what this thread brought about. It got people off their seats and they did something. A few of you chose to spend those few seconds sending the PMs, and you got your new winner. A great post was recognized - again. Just like you wanted.

And believe it or not, this system does have an advantage. You don't have to wait a week. You can have 5 or 10 winners a week. All it takes is 5 nominations. With the old system, if 1 guy got 8 nominations and the next only got 7 - only the guy with 8 won. With this system - they both win !

And just like the old way, this one requires your help. You have to vote. You, the members, are what make this forum what it is. You always have, I've told you that more times than I can count.

So instead of sitting around and going waaaaaah ! :crying: because you can't click on a button anymore - get behind the idea and do your part - vote ! And you'll have what you want.

I can't give the old way back, wish I could but I can't - sorry. But I can give you this. And it will have one other advantage that the old system did not. No software update can make this one go away. This one is here forever ! Assuming of course that you participate.

So do you care enough to participate ? You say you do - now prove it ;)

On a positive note - I now have 22 threads with nominations. Some only need or two more nominations to get to the Winners thread.

So keep it up folks, apparently my "complaining" does some good now n then ;)

I seriously doubt that i will soon be the teacher.
I do love learning and try to read at least two books a week on collecting. i have always loved to read and have been reading two books a week for years. I know just direct most of the reading to coin collecting. I love collecting the Lincoln series and he was the one who said, "Great leaders are great readers". That is so very true. Reading definately keeps your mind active.
I really value the opinion of a lot of people on this forum, you being one of them. Your posts and help during this beginning of my collection has been great and I think that is why I did not want you or anyone else on here to think that we all are a burden on the forum. I try to post the best info as I can and not list a bunch of dribble. Nothing is more aggravating than to see nothing but one line or one word post all the time from the same person. That happens from some of the senior guys and newbies here and all it does is take up space. I guees it is done for post count or credits but I really dont understand why.
As I grow in the hobby I will try to be as helpfull to someone else as most people on here have been to me.

Don't worry, Dougie just wanted to make it into the "Cointalk History" thread again, :rolling::goofer:
    EDIT TO ADD:
I've never seen Doug raise his voice when it wasn't quite necesary.
Just thought I would throw that in there.
And if you're reading 2 books a week for that long, then you certainly are ahead of most collectors on here when it comes to knowledge. You have me beat, that's for sure.

Doug, if only there were a way to have a button to vote...

    just kidding

Another good thing about PM'ing is we have the option of voting posts and not just entire threads.

I agree that nominating a post is better than just the threads. Many times the greatest post is a simple answer to a question posed by a beginner.

Just to clarify, I have been reading two books a week for years but have only been collecting for a couple of months. I joined here when I started so i dont have a long time of reading on coins yet. But, get with me this time next year :kewl:

Naw, Doug. I got the new car. Took care of it, washed it, waxed it, and then it disappeared. So, excuse me if I don't appreciate the 100,000 mile used car replacement and do not feel inspired to drive it.

In any event, you got the reaction you wanted. I gave an opinion and you want to deride it. Fine. I bow and kiss your feet.

Going forward, bravo to those who have donated/will donate their time and effort to create informative threads and to those who take the time to recognize them.

I am shocked – even at my age, I have learned more here at CoinTalk regarding coins and currency than I did reading tons of magazines and years old books at places called libraries. And the price for all of this? A simple PM to acknowledge great posts?

Get a grip; I will certainly try to be more aware myself. I have no sympathy for those who can only point and click – that is why S&W is in business – LOL
