Nothing quite as bad as a pain in the mouth, which yours translated into your sinuses. Glad the "out" come has relieved you.
You should send it in to be graded and slabbed. LOL Heck, they do crickets, why not a tooth?

I don't know which area your tooth was in, but I had 2 teeth taken out and cow bone planted in the hole so he could do an implant. I don't know what VA will do, but if you don't have something in there, the hole the tooth was in could get serious infected. I'm lucky. I, too am a veteran (Vietnam era), but I am also a retired state employee and I have great dental insurance. I wouldn't go to the VA for any dental, if I could afford it, however, I found out that the VA doesn't do some things, so I didn't even try.
Take care of that tooth and your others. Get a Water Pik and use Sensodyne toothpaste to keep your teeth and mouth clean.
    Best of luck.

Sorry you're having trouble, but thank you for your service! I've been dealing with sinus infection for almost 2 weeks (I'm a slow learner). Like you, yesterday it all started breaking up. It's unbelievable what will come out! That's all I'll say about that. But, if I knew, for certain that my wife wouldn't see this post, I would have posted a picture of my false teeth, lol. But, she doesn't share my sense of humor, so y'all are probably silently thanking my wife, right about now, lol. You'll just have to take my word for it, without a picture.

You may have fooled the others, but not this ole boy. That looks
like a Megalodon tooth I can buy at the local antique mall. ;)
Kidding aside, I hope you mend quickly!!

I grew up being a son of a soldier. As his family, I was supposed to have dental work done for free on base, but it seems that my parents didn't have the clout that some other dependents had. I don't know how many of you are old enough to remember when fluoride came out to help protect our teeth, but it seems we were always stationed far from where dentists were available. I have crowns on almost every tooth I own. I have 2 implants and a bridge. I should have had them all pulled and get false teeth, but then I would have to sell all my coins.

tooth pain is the absolute worst in my book, even rivaliing kidney stones (both of which i suffered with) hurts more than getting shot by a gun

Or Prostate on men. I had my Prostate surgery about 3 years ago and all is well. With the right doctor, you won't have any problems.

Sorry, I'm a little late to the party. I just saw this.

Without doing an actual exam, I really can't give a firm 100% answer on what happened. But, here is what I feel is most likely.

It looks to be either a second or third (wisdom tooth) upper molar based on the shape of the root and tooth itself. The only reason a tooth will just "fall" out is due to bone loss around the tooth. There are a couple reasons why this can happen. One is severe decay can cause an abscess at the end of the root that with enough time can cause the tooth to exfoliate on its own. Frankly, this is quite rare and unlikely.

There could have been a hairline vertical root fracture on the tooth as well. That can cause this.

Another reason is bone loss from the top of the tooth down (meaning not from the end of the root)...and this is a fairly common issue. Periodontal disease (gun disease) can progress to the point where we get bone loss. I'll save you the big medical words...but basically if the right (wrong?) kind of bacteria are present in gum pockets long enough our own immune system reacts in a way where the jaw bone dissolves and teeth can literally fall out. When it gets to the point, there is frequently infection.

What concerns me about this (which in my opinion is a fairly common thing) is that it rarely involves individual teeth. We typically see periodontal disease as a whole mouth condition and weakly anchored teeth (which second and third upper molars tend to me) can be some of the first noticeably effected. I would see your dentist ASAP and see if there is any gum treatment needed so you don't lose anymore teeth.
