How'd you know I said all those things, was I that loud? Yes absolutely my best find, far beyond any expectations
Which bank did you get the Ikes from? Did you have to special order them? My bank sometimes has a couple of loose Ikes in the teller's tray but never bags.
I think that @vintagemintage is being paid by the FRB to post this stuff here. They have a bunch of Ike's to get rid of and wanted to see a huge spike in bag orders this month. ;-) (That's me being jealous)
The branch manager at my main bank told me today that they lost the ability to order $1 coins a long time ago back when the gold presidential coins were going crazy with collectors, she said it may be possible to order a grand of dollar coins but she has no control of the mixture be it SBA, Sacajawea, or Ikes it comes the way it does. Im still tempted lol. I still need to ask my other bank though.
Let us know how those mix bags go. I had a manager at a bank say that they could possibly order them for me too.
It won't be a mixed bag, it'll be a $1000 box of small dollars. Ikes are special request and based on availability but like I said, most vault tellers don't know this, or how to order. Eric's teller is no different. Have them talk to their coin supplier to ask the process, or offer to call for them.
If I score some Ikes by doing what you suggested how do I get rid of them once I am done hunting? Seems like a pain to get money back. Are there coin machines that take them?
That's the tough part. You'd have to dump them on some poor branch. Never seen a machine that takes them. I've done the eBay thing in lots of 50-100, made about 3-5 cents per coin after fees. Didn't really seem worth it to me.
I don't know if I'm allowed to post a link to another coin forum, so mods, feel free to delete. But, this is a great thread on Ike hunting. http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=240596
To get rid of the unwanted coins - you could buy some Eisenhower Whitman albums, make a few complete sets (or almost complete), and sell them online. Or if you have any plans to have a yard sale this spring, give them out as change. I sell records and vintage stuff at a local flea market type event a few times a year, and I'm always giving out unwanted halves as change.
I just stopped by Wells Fargo to see if they could special order some ikes, and they said that the only dollars they can order are the gold presidential ones. Are there any other banks I should try?
Sounds like a nice idea at first, but, what you'll get will be all 71, 72, 74, 76, 77, & 78's. P's & D's. Likely not to find any 73 P&D or any S stuff, so even if your not filling the album with proofs, only 2/3 of a set.
My bank is Bank of America and all the branches in a 10 mile radius of me all said no they cannot order a $1,000 bag. Only presidential dollar ones. I said what about special ordering on the form or writing Eisenhower dollar coins under Other. All said no.
Actually, most versions of the Whitman Eisenhower album doesn't even have slots for 1973 P & D, or any of the S-mint proofs. However, some versions of the folder also include Susan B. Anthony dollars as well.
Wow!! That in insane, best find I have ever heard of. I am going to try calling a few banks and see if I can get a bag like that, sounds like an almost guarantee to get a few worth keeping. I will feel bad dumping them on another bank though
