I use a free program that Heritage offers. You access it on their site. They will keep all your values up to date for you. It's amazing what you can do with it. I have used it for approximately 10+ years now and not one problem. I take an update on a memory stick when I go to shows. Then I keep it as a backup just in case.

I track what I paid as a measure against other coins of similar type and to help my heirs if they decide to sell. I also record if I got it for significantly less than retail. I have the ability to generate various reports about totals, amount spent per month, etc.

Sorry to be so obtuse, but what good does the purchase price have to do with what your heirs sell the coins for? They'll get what the market is willing to pay for them, right?

I would like them armed with every bit of information about the coin should they sadly decide to sell.

..or to remind you of how smart you were. It's fun for me to look back at what I paid for a coin and compare it to its value today. I managed to buy some nice Buffs and SLQ's when I was younger and before they rose in value so much.

True, but for me I guess it would be nice to give my heirs a starting point it see how bad my collection/investment gets ripped off if it ends up at an estate sale.

For you cloud users; easy access, bad security and protection.

If I paid $300 for a coin and a dealer offered my hiers just $50 for it, they need to know why. Multiply that times other settlement discrepancies, and they will know to walk away from this deal. If you also sell some of your pieces, this information is valuable to yourself as well.

I too have many excel sheets. One for each individual series I collect. I track cost, current value, grade and place of purchase. I have lost my info a time or two so I would suggest backing up frequently. lol Also, I have a Total Value sheet where I automatically have all the individual sets fed to it to get a value for my whole collection.

I have a Mac too but haven't heard of that one. I'm currently using Bento & Excel. Bento was created by Filemaker. It basically was a lite database program but they ended up discontinuing. It still works and I like the interface better than Excel but I'm sure as time goes by a system upgrade will eventually "break" the software so that's why I'm also keeping it in Excel. Will have to check out Recollector.

I looked at the Recollector web site and though the site says the software is for Macs the screen prints have a very Windows look :( That's my main issues with collecting software that is compatible with the Mac OS. The developer doesn't really change the look of the interface so it stays looking like an ugly Windows interface.

As many have mentioned, I use Excel with many tabs and Vlookup tables. It is great to update a currency tab or a coinflation tab and have it automatically update the value of the foreign coin values or the coins with bullion value. I also use the tabs to quickly show me the coins that I missing by denomination.

Hi Phil, how do you use a vlookup to automatically update bullion prices?
