Had coin club last night and picked up a couple coins, haven't bought much lately so i saw this and would fit in my Gold group. I'm not cracking this out because its so small and want to drive you slab haters crazy. i own hundreds of slabbed modern coins, have broke out 100's for my albums. I gave a talk on the Roman Timeline and had 20 ancients in a tray to look at and feel, the club loved it, i also feed them so they better love it or they'll get roadkill for dinner next month. i don't care one way or the other about slabs, there your coins. Byzantine Empire Anastasius l 491-518 AD. AV Tremissis, Obv. Bust right of Anastastius l Rev. Victory advancing. 10mm x 1.04g. clipped.
Nice @Eng , congrats on the gold! It is a little guy, so I see why you entomb it. Someday, I will come back and visit my NW USA stomping ground... maybe we could crack it together!
Having a coin club sounds like fun. How many ancient collectors are there (that is coins not the people) ?
Al anytime you can come out we'd love to meet you. Theodosius, My club is the Boeing coin club about a 100 members, which 4 or 5 are Ancient collectors, the guy i buy from does business for Boeing all over Europe and stays there for a month at a time and has time to find ancient and world coins.
sweet little tremessis ENG! what did you make everyone for dinner? your posts usually make me hungry.
Hi Chris, made 125 half white and wheat, turkey and ham sandwich's, 4 bag's of chips, 3 family pak cookie's, pop and water and bowl oranges. not much left!!
There are some great threads outlining why we crack them. Search "Slab" and you can see the conversations
Wouldn't you want to hold in your hands something that is many centuries old, that has passed through ancient hands before you, instead of being forced to see it behind thick plastic?
Nice. What grade is it Here is my copper coin of Anastasius. Æ Follis (17.1g , 36mm) Constantinople mint, 5th officina Struck 498-518 D N ANASTA SIVS P P AVC, diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Large M (mark of value); star to left and right, cross above, A below; CON. Sear 19
Is the gold really that red/copper color? These coins are hard enough to image when not slabbed but this is not a color that reminds me of gold I have seen.
Yes, gold can be very red / copper. My Krugerrands are MUCH redder than my American Gold Eagles due to the higher copper content in the Krugers. It is very noticeable. I would think that Ancients could have the same issue with different added metals or impurities with the Gold. Of course, it could only be photographic lighting difference in the case of the OP?
Bad question to ask on the ancient forum site. It's kind of like discussing American politics. Lots of passion on both sides.
I was wondering that myself. When I first looked at the image I thought I was looking at a bronze. Other than that, it's a wonderful pickup John. Congrats.
What, you don't think a Roman time traveler dropped this tremissis into the Boscoreale Hoard just to confound us all today?
