If you have it to spend and money isn’t a problem, and coins are your thing, buy and enjoy! Me, I’m waiting to find my treasure from a coin star return slot. lol… it’s a numbers game. Buy high, sell low!

Now, even after my Vaultbox purchases and reveal, I can still honestly say I don’t think I’ve ever paid WAY too much for a coin. Too much, yes, I’ve done that plenty of times, especially for toners.

I have a few examples to share (and could come up with more if I tried but won't at this time :p).

First is this Morgan that I know I won't recoup my cost as I've had no luck selling it at a loss. I was swayed by the colors on the top half plus convinced that I was getting a deal by winning the auction at over $100 less than its previous appearance. Unfortunately the bottom portion of the coin is less appealing and despite the market on toners increasing, I was the only one who valued it anywhere close to where it sold for.

On the brighter side, we have a Columbian that I really enjoy (and it rests in my box of 20). Here the colors are great throughout and the luster is solid as well. I paid around 10x of a typical AU 58 but it was worth it.

Here’s another one I’m upside-down in. By my reckoning, I’m into it for about $799 after the fees and such. NGC priceguide currently lists it at $620.

I don’t even remember how that happened. Likely bidder enthusiasm on my part. I always wanted an 1851-O trime.

And I guess it’s not even really a PQ example for an AU58, though it’s certainly solid enough for the grade. It’s a bit whiter in hand, and there is a touch of subtle luster not seen in these photos.

I’m pleased to own it, even if I likely paid too much for it.

On the flip side, the good news is, I’m finding several pieces in my collection (particularly in the US gold), where I’m invested significantly below the coins’ current values. (You might say I’m “golden” on those.)

So I reckon the ones I got for a good price (or those which have appreciated in value) make up for those I paid too much for. I think it all balances out pretty well.

Hmm. I’m also very upside-down on this Roman cistophoric tetradrachm of Augustus.

    IMG_8233.jpeg IMG_8234.jpeg IMG_8235.jpeg

Last year, an ancients dealer gave me an unbiased third-party appraisal of $1,100 on it. After GBP to USD conversion and slab fees, I reckon I’m into it for about $1,900-something. Way too much. It also garnered a below-average (2/5) surface rating when I sent it to NGC, but it got a perfect (5/5) strike rating, and a nice overall technical grade (XF).

It has a great portrait and a cool capricorn on the reverse (I’m a Capricorn, hence the enthusiasm.) I had always wanted one of these big silver Roman provincial tetradrachms, and they don’t come cheap.

Realistically, I’m unlikely to ever recoup my investment on this piece if I sell it, but it serves well in representing the emperor Augustus in my Twelve Caesars collection.

Side note: on the other hand, now that it’s in a slab, you never know. I’ve been watching a recent auction of NGC-slabbed Romans on Heritage, and have seen some really strong prices. Even some crackpipe-crazy prices in a few cases. So, at auction, I guess you can never tell…

The 3CS is, without any close runner-up,the most underrated under priced bargain out there, and because of this, in the last year or so, is receiving a substantial increase in interest.

Legend sort of started the half-disme interest a few years back, and has started subtly doing the same thing with 3CS.

Yes, yes, the gold thingys are all the rage, especially finding the bestest of the bestest. But, that will come to an end, because there are not going to be any bestest of the bestest available, and only so many collectors can seriously consider actively participating in the goldbug craze.

Again, as with your previous example(s), I do not think you have an ugly duckling, either in appearance or economically.

    So......
