If you dare, post a coin you paid WAY too much for, and are unlikely to ever recoup your money on…

    Here is my worst offender.

    Here are two others.

    1794 Larger Cent ALL.jpg

    1795 Large Cent All.jpg

Both of these early large cents are graded MS-62, Brown.

I have paid too much for some other coins, but the market caught up with my price paid. I don't think that will happen with these three.

I bought it in the year Men in Black came out. My grandfather and I would make a yearly trip to Chicago, and a visit to Harlan Berk was always a priority. It's only in F+ condition, fairly worn for gold, but it's Johannes.

Series 7 goes on sale tomorrow. Yes, it's my intention to "roll the dice".

Yep, I'll grant this: @BuffaloHunter's chances of getting something worthwhile out of Vault are a lot better than mine, which are exactly 0.

I’m no expert on mint state early copper but the eye appeal on your two Liberty Caps looks off the charts for MS62. Wouldn’t most coins in that grade have a lot of spots?

    I will take the plunge:

Purchased this 1811 half eagle from a dealer at Summer FUN 2021. This coin was not on my want list and I'd never intended to buy early gold - ever. But in a casual conversation, the dealer mentioned he had a line on this and I should take a look. After some negotiation, I bought it even though I knew I was well underwater. The heart wants what it wants!

On the plus side, it's in an old PCGS holder and I thought it might grade one point higher today or maybe get a CAC sticker. I've not pursued those possibilities.

    Purchased in 2021 for $7300.
At the time, Greysheet was $5350.
    NGC Price Guide was $7000.

It's recovered a bit since then.
    Current Greysheet is $6800.
    Current CDN CPG is $7750.

Neat question and really made me think about my coins and my coin budgets. I would be embarrassed to have most people see how many house and days I put into a every coin purchase. Especially since the vast majority of my coins fall in the under $300 range. (In truth I sometimes wonder if the GSA and the Congress put as much time and sweat into a trillion dollar budget as I put into a single coin.)
On the other hand I have a reverse question. Have you ever spent large collective amounts of money on building a collection fully well knowing you would be very lucky to get even 80 percent back? To me this would be $5,000 to $10, 000 dollars. And yes I have done this more than once. James

I spent close to twice book when I bought it. Although it has caught up some it still would have a long way to go. Who cares...it's a lifer in my collection, anyway.

You might be correct. Gregory Brunk was going to include this coin in his data base but passed away before that was done. There might be some discussion about that on cointalk.

Randy, our private text conversation about your dime is what inspired me to create this thread. I’m glad you posted it.

I don't think ego has much to do with those that spend thousands on a coin. It's more of a passion for the hobby to own a special coin.
