Similar maybe, but not the same. Man made diamonds, no matter how good they are, can still be identified as being man made. When artificial toning is done correctly it is physically and chemically impossible to tell AT from NT. The reason nobody can ever tell one from the other is because both are caused by the exactly the same chemical reactions between the metal and chemicals in the air. The only real difference is intent - NT happens accidentally and AT happens intentionally. And while it can be accurately said that time is also a factor with AT, it is also a factor with NT. Some NT takes a long time to occur, years or even a decade or two. But some NT occurs relatively very quickly, in a matter of a few weeks or a month. It all depends on the conditions and variables. The time factor with AT could easily be adjusted to take years or even a decade if you wanted to, but it can just as easily be done in a few hours. But in all cases with AT and NT the chemical reactions are identical and cannot be distinguished from one another.
