I wouldn't change a thing! I wouldn't travel, already done that. Can't move to Hawaii and live at the beach, already done that. Can't buy another house, already done that. Can't buy a boat and fish all day, already done that. Can't give all my money to my wife, already done that. Can't give a whole bunch to my kids, already done that too. Hmmmmm . . . guess I'll juss stick with collecting coins and looking at 'em.
A million dollars wouldn't change my live style very much. I would still live in the same house. I would still drive my Scion Tc and go to work every day. Know if it where 5 or 10 million dollars that's a different story. New house, new car and no work. When my moms Alzheimer's got out of control I went thru $ 100,000 dollars cash in 15 months. So you see a million dollar just doesn't seem like very much money to me anymore. Lou
Clembo and all - my thinking on this wasn't how I'd use the money to pay off other debts. I guess when I posted I was thinking how if I had that amount of money, regardless of other priorities/debts, I'd always have enough money for whatever I wanted to do in the hobby (beyond placing a bid on an 1804 dollar). So, if practically, money was no obstacle, how would this change my fascination with the hobby? Would I quickly lose interest because it all came too easy? Would I not value what I collected because there was no sweat equity? Is this potential reaction similar to a coin dealer who sees coins daily that it is just a commodity business, not a hobby? I think it might do just that to me (not that I wouldn't mind having that problem to overcome!). Would I narrow my focus on ultra rare coins in certain series? I'm thinking of some of the wealthy collectors on other forums (i.e. the guy who focuses on MS or Proof Seated Dollars - he has a stunning collection - speedy? on the seated forum?). So, the higher dollar coin then forces one to collect fewer versus many? I know we all have different incomes on this board and have different demands for our resources. But the question is, if money wasn't a factor, how would this change your collecting habits and would you suddenly turn up your nose at the coins you cherish now?
The first thing I would do would be to pay the mortgage and pay off the creditcards. Next I would buy a new car for my wife and I. The rest would be invested so I could travel more often and buy more coins. (my kids can find their own way to school) Just kidding
Class act Spider....taking care of that education and Mom too. Me? Well, I'd probably set up trust accounts for all the kids and then try to bury some in investments and lots of bullion. Yeah, I know that bullion isn't really an investment, just a hedge, but hey....I've always wanted to own a chunk. Now to what Catbert said....would I change in my collecting habits? No, I'd still order stuff from the mint only I'd probably order more. I'd love to travel and frequent some of the major coin shows that go on all around the country. I'd start collecting coins that I can only dream about having. Would I suddenly turn my nose up at coins that I cherish now? No....it's taken me a great number of years to assemble what I've got today. Lots of memories in all of what I've put together. I couldn't bear to part with any of it and I don't think I'd ever look down upon it....just keep adding to it and then, when the time comes, pass it on to the next generation.
I would start the largest collection of wheat pennies known to man! - actually i don't think i'd tell anybody i had it, and just invest and invest until I would normally retire.. and then boom.. life vacation! 20+ years of interest wouldn't be half bad. -DJ
If I won the lotto. 1. Pick myself off the floor two days later(heart attack) 2. buy my two or three coins I want. hya:My angle. I call her that (The proof) Than take a trip to every state and pick up one or two coins. the Good ones. Buy Stephen his boat for fishing.:hail:
Hey I have one too I teach little kids swimming lessons at the Y! =( I just have always wanted a nice Ferrari
If I adopted him, he'd have to live on an island, where people live on the beach, surf and dive all day, older ones go fishing all day, men and the boys do all the cooking Yup, Didn't you know that? so he'd have to learn to cook . . . Since he didn't grow up here, I doubt if he could handle the polynesian wahine's . . . they'd have him for lunch before he even knew he was on the menu. But I guess I wouldn't have to spend too much on clothes, we only wear shorts, T-shirts when it gets cold and slippers if we have to dress up. :kewl: O yeah, I'd have to get him shades. But all in all I guess I could adopt him. Haven't tried adopting yet. OK, settled then, send me the mil $$$ and I'll devote a portion to raise him. :mouth: BTW . . . does he know how to wash cars and trucks?
invest 750000 of it, then go wild with the rest. Big screen TV, trip to the "East Caribbean coin group" and all that jazz.
