Any guesses about the strike price of this Ides of March denarius that will be auctioned at NAC 70 in May?
I would estimate 140,000 Euro, so about $182,000 plus the vig. That would be around $218,000 all in. Still very strong prices realized for such coins nowadays.
That one is going to go sky high in price, more than likely. No idea what the starting price would be.
There is an aureus on the same listing with a starting bid of 320,000 Swiss Francs ... here's an image:
I'm going to reserve judgment on it until I see it in person in a few weeks but the run of NAC auctions have a very impressive array of coins in them.
True, it will depend what it looks like in hand. From the photo it appeared to be a nice problem free midrange specimen. A top specimen would hit a million plus imo.
It's definitely better than many, but I think the images don't show everything. I'm surprised at the poor image they have in their catalog compared to the other coins), but here's a slightly enlarged version, showing some scratches beneath the EID:
Yah, I've decided "not" to bid on this coin ... call me crazy?! => but I'll guess that somebody else will bid $125,000 (final answer)
Let say that if I had the money needed to buy such a coin, I would be VERY careful. My first thought was the same... there's something fishy about that coin... but, on the other hand, the style is good (known dies), surface is quite convincing, extensive pedigree going back to 1913,... For comparison... http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=7671
This coin just sold for 300K CHF (about $370K US including Buyer's Premium). I wasn't the underbidder but was close. It's a disappointment but it truly shows just how historic these coins are.
I'm sorry to hear that Joe. It would have been very cool if you could have posted the coin as your latest acquisition on this forum!
