Hello, and firstly thank you so much for your long message and expertise on dies! It’s great to hear someone with this experience. So my first thought actually was also either die rust, wear or even uneven surface on the die. But given there are only two known coins of this example I could find, i definitely wanted to eliminate the thought of them being transfer die fakes. And this is why i had to determine whether the damage was die related, or post minting damage that was transferred from the mother coin. But i understand that should that have been the case, every damage would have been transferred, and not just some. Now yes one coin is in worse shape however, there are areas in the rippled area on the good condition coin that are flat, but rippled on the bad condition coin. So, my understanding is that this is likely not a transfer die forgery. Additionally i have some thoughts i wrote to another commenter on how i don’t think that would be economically viable. And thank you for bringing up provenance, the good condition one is ex Gorny & Mosch, ex Stephen Album ex Kenneth Bovenkamp collection, NGC graded and published in a very important series of Books on Ottoman coinage (although the author of that book likely took the image for the coin from the GM auction catalog). And the other coin is from Stanley Gibbons Baldwins. So provenance is good, but as i am sure you will agree, it is always good to do more research and understand better yourself! Which is what i am trying to do hence i am so grateful for all the valuable help you have provided above!
