The Caracalla Provincial seems to read -poppoleon (in Greek) reverse right so I would start with Philipoppolis. The obverse with the eagle reverse has obverse legend DIVIAVGFAVGVST but could have a TI or other before the DIVI so it could be someone other than Tiberius. The portrait looks like Claudius but that could be my imagination working overtime. I am not a Julio-Claudian specialist so do not have a good answer.
So sorry for my confusing array pf pics, but if you look at third from top, the reverses are in same order of previous two pics. In other words, the reverse you are showing belongs to the Agrippa coin
I never considered the chin for him, good point though. The nose and chin also could be Vespasian, maybe his son too. Since I have nothing else to go on, I’ll just place it in my collection of slugs
I personally don't think it is Agrippa, rather Augustus. Somewhat like this one of mine... Rather than this one of Agrippa...
interesting! I think you’re right, since I just found another Augustus among my sluggish ones I forgot about. I’ll post it and see if you all recognize it, since it’s low-grade
Thanks again for any help, and here’s one more. I’m fuessing Septimius Severus, Albinus, or something like this, without looking through my books yet
Now that I’m looking, you’re absolutely correct! Can you send me any attribution info that can help me write the details on my 2x2 card. Much appreciated!!
it doesnt look like a radiate, but the only other option in ERIC is 684 but the head is right. Now I know every resource can have omitted varieties due to the overabundance in some cases, but I reviewed the RIC number’s accompanying attributes (eg obverse legend) and it rings true looking closely at coin. Feels good to have an attribution completed, at least for a newbie like me Thanks again everyone
In post 5221444 (above) Justin Lee said “I personally don't think it is Agrippa, rather Augustus, Somewhat like this one of mine .... Yes, also like the following Titus Restoration coin of mine. However, your coin could have been one issued by Domitian, hence the slightly different legend spacing on the obverse - hard to determine due to the partially obliterated reverse legend. “Restitvit” is pretty clear, however. AUGUSTUS AS, TITUS RESTORATION ISSUE, 80-81 AD (27mm, 10.71 gm) BMCRE Volume II, Rome, Titus No. 273-275 RIC Volume II, Part 1 (second edition), Titus, No. 462 Obverse depiction: Augustus, radiate head facing left Inscription: DIVVS AV _ GVSTVS PATER Reverse depiction: Eagle with wings spread standing on Globe Inscription: IMP T CAES AVG RESTITVIT - S C (above, left and right)
This is what I have for mine... https://iomegacollection.home.blog/2019/04/09/augustus-struck-by-titus/
I cannot help you much there @joecoincollect because I do not keep up with Ancient coin prices. If you would like to read my overview of the restoration/restitution coinage of Titus (Plus information relating to Domitian, Nerva & Trajan Restoration coinage) click on the link in my signature block.
This is not the worst Alexandria mint coin I have seen. I even see NET at reverse left which identifies the reverse type.
thanks for sharing, cool to see. I double check though and I believe the Titus variation of our coin is head Right, and ours is Left. The Left one is Domitian. I doubled checked. Either the book I’m consulting is missing some other variations but ours have to be Domitian. Double check if you have time. Maybe there’s a Titus head-Left variation I’m unaware of in other words, and this is very likely. Cheers and thanks, joe
