Excellent find, David. It's always nice when you can find those hidden gems that seem to have been overlooked.
I like it. Cool coin. I actually can post something to this thread. Domitian was my first ancient silver coin.
For an experienced collector who understands very well the coins he collects, eBay is fine as a source. It is not great for inexperienced collectors or those unfamiliar with the type of coins they're shopping for.
. In fact, the final 'I' in the obverse legend appears to have been engraved over the tip of the bust, indicating it is a reworked TR P V die. Not long after this coin was struck (perhaps just a few days) word reached the mint of Domitian's thirteenth imperial acclamation, ending this issue's brief run. evey coin has some special isue in letter form S brokes the neck in the emperor wow i am R3 now
Interesting that you bring up die matching in such cases. The unique coin cited by RIC is not illustrated, so I'm unable to do so. I would not be surprised if the two were die matches.
I dont want to put words into anyones mouth, but I think perhaps when ro says he sees III instead of II he is adding in the end of the spear, which at that exact point might just look like a letter to some.
