Hi Darryl, That Baby was in a bank wrapped roll so it's hot....but not that kinda hot !!! That is a phenomenal find!!! Very Nice find!! I'm grinning from ear to ear as I look at the pictures! Way to Go! Bill O'
Very cool! But I bet the record is on that Found in Rolls website, an Edward II silver penny from England, c. 1310! Beyond that, I attributed a Commodus denarius once for someone that was found back in the 30's in a bag of dimes.
By the way....PS: As old as it is, you would have to go some to break my all time record for old I've found prutah(s) and lepta(s) from the time of Christ in hand wrapped rolls. Oldest U.S is an 1804 1/2 cent in a roll of quarters That's not to take away from your excellent find but it can be an incentive to find coins that go even further back They are out there!! Have Fun, Bill
Thanks all!!! Okay - guess the record is a little older than I thought! This is the reason I spend my lunches hoping to find something cool while letting a little stress of the day go by!
Congratulations! At the last show I set up at, a guy was walking around a $2.50 gold piece that he said he found in a roll of cents. I'm not sure whether I believed his story, as the piece looked suspect. I do believe your story, though, and that's a great find for $.01
Great find, Liberty is strong but thats the last to go. See if you can see any of the bow on the obverse. Looks like full rims on the Obverse, maybe a little less on the reverse. Probably grade at G4 to VG8 . F15 if any of the bow is showing. Congrats, I'd go back to that bank for a few more rolls. Once in a lifetime find. You should send it in to Coin Finds in Coin Magazine. they have a found in circulation section and they would publish your find.
Score! Whoever put that roll together must have been day dreaming! You would have thought their counter would have spit it out. The counter at my local bank rejects Eisenhower dollars.
If I ever find gold in a cent roll I guess it would take a while for me to calm down enough to post a picture of it! I am very happy to have my dime and would bet it will be some time before I ever find something like this again. I have no idea how this gets through the rolling machine but am happy to have it! The reverse took the brunt of the damage from going through it but it is still remarkable for the age. I would like to think that a coin collector intentionally spent it to give a collector a nice surprise. If that is the case, it worked... Thanks!
Have to think it went through a machine based on the reverse but no idea why the machine didn't kick it out. They were the rolled under edges in a sealed box so I don't think there was human intervention.
Thanks, I am still dumb-founded that it was in there. 173 year old coin in a bank roll - how does it happen? This dime is officially retired for as long as I can help it. Hope it lasts another 173 years...
The 1836 dime was larger than the modern dimes. The counting machine kicked it to the next largest coin, the cent. Great find.
