Hey y’all! Have been sorting through my state quarters today and just came across this ‘05P WSQ West Virginia. What I thought was a scratch on the obverse might actually be a crack, but not from a die crack; it starts left of the C in AMERICA, flows at a diagonal left and down to George’s neck, and continues diagonally down and left to the E in QUARTER. On the reverse, there is a small piece of metal that seamlessly folds over from the edge at about the 4pm position. Did I actually find a true mint error..??!!? Thanks in advance!
Hi Imho, it looks like a cud! Nice find! Could be a possible die crack?, let’s hear what the experts say.
Thank you, Paddyman98 (& R_rabbit). I was looking all over on Error-Ref.com for something that looked like mine, but wasn’t finding anything. However, put “cud error” in the search box and guess what...?!?! I find a picture that looks like mine! lol It’s labeled as a “Rim Cud”...would you concur? Also, just for giggles, is there any value to a coin like this even though it’s not a PR or is it more along the lines of being a “keeper”? Thanks again!
What does PR mean? Those are common CUD breaks found on the newer Quarter series. Worth $10.00 - $15.00
Others have already said it but I'll rephrase; You have a CUD. A cud is a die break along the rim. A cud must touch the rim where a die break may occur elsewhere on the coin. PF is the abbreviation for Proof. A proof is a type of manufacture of a coin, nothing else. A proof coin is struck from specially prepared and polished dies and planchets. What we see in circulation are known as circulation or business strikes. Hope that helps clear things up a bit for you. Congrats on finding a true Mint error. While not worth much it's always nice to find one yourself.
Thanks y’all! When I first started going through my stash of coins we had been collecting in a 5-gal water jug for over 20 years, I estimated about $600 in quarters to look at I think I bit off a little more than I can chew...but finding this CUD has made it worthwhile for me. It may not be a money-maker and I’m good with that. This is kind of fun!
You may have a true error in the CUD, but ... imho, the obverse is a scratch, not a die crack...sorry...Spark
