I think halves should be a part of the U.S. Mint's Direct Ship Program, don't you?

:eek:Gosh WS, I do my banking electronically. I do not think I have been inside a bank for over 15 years. Do they still have human beings working inside of them ???

The problem is is that the dollar coins, the half dollars, and the 2 dollar bill are rare. Nobody sees them (including me) and so they are very coveted. I think that the presidential dollars are a bad idea because the dollar coins should be CIRCULATING, not meant for collecting. The only desire for those coins for a collection, not for general circulation, which puts the coin in more hands.

I would mint the pennies in a small amount, and mint the quarters in the nickel composition, and add a 200 dollar bill. Eliminate the half and the dime

    Penny mintage (gradual decrease):
    2015- 3,000,000,000/ 2016- 2,500,000,000/ 2017- 2,000,000,000/ 2018- 1,500,000,000/ 2019- 1,000,000,000 /2020- 750,000,000/ 2021- 400,000,000/ 2022- 200,000,000/ 2023- 100,000,000/ 2024- 60,000,000/ 2025 on- 30,000,000, making it desired, limiting circulation even more

Drago, you opened up a plethora of thoughts on coin and bill changers. With today's technology a change machin could do anything. Just think that when a person dumps a Silver Cert. for some change. The machine would recognize it and keep it until a person cashing in their change could be asked if they wanted old bills or new bills. Ditto with silver coins for new coins.
Of course there is a charge but the possibillities are there. Just think, cashing in a box of serched halves a being asked what
kind of bills or coins you wants. Oh well when coins were scarce in 1862-1863 they were issued in fractional paper notes.

They could care less about collectors' needs. The Mint is required to produce the half dollar by law, and like the cent and the dollar bill, Congress is reluctant to do anything about it. It would have been a good idea to use the half dollar for a commemorative series like the ATB quarters. Unfortunately, the powers that be, have about as much artistic ability as a hog in slop.

The metal value of a half dollar is higher than an other coin currently minted for circulation. There is no way the mint is going to start minting tons of them (under current specs) and start shipping them out. The ones that do end up in circulation are the ones the mint didn't sell in sets or as part of their buy by the roll program.

I wasn't aware, until I discussed this at my local bank, that the bank has to pay delivery charges to the FRB for monies that they order. Because of that, they won't order items that they don't think they can push. They won't order $2 bills in less than quantities (and multiples) of less than 1000. Halves, they don't even want laying around, and often accumulate and return the ones they do get.

Merchants might not want to pay postage charges for coins, but banks don't want to pay delivery charges either (Brinks doesn't work free.)

Well, this discussion leads me to believe its time for the Treasury to start minting say $20 Silver Dollars say Ike sized at .50 fine. With inflation that would be about the right denomination and fineness to ensure use and make the specie less valuable than the face value.
