A great deal of the RCM "granny bait" is sold through Canada Post Offices, as well as to folks that are on their mailing list for their annual output of mostly unspectacular things. The circulating special coinage for circulating items and the $20 for $20 or $10 for $10 are sent postage free to us Canucks so it's not a bad buy. Since Canadian postage is so expensive (there's even 13% tax on the postage) the cost to even mail 5 toonies would exceed the cost of the coins if sent to the US.

In Canada, we have the Charlton Annualk Coin guide, similar to the US Reed Book to get a general idea of the tetail prices for Canadian coinage. Three years ago, they had to start publishing a separate book, just for all the enormous amount of NCLT that they churn out, most of which can be purchased on the secondary market 2-3 down the road for 50-60% of issue price. The book for just RCM stuff is bigger than the book for all circulating coinage since 1858 and all the introductory and ID material. The coins that they put out commemorate odd things with odd anniverseries, like 95 years ago.... or things that just have a tenuous tie to Canada, like the Superman stuff or Johnny Appleseed.

My personal opinion is that the RCM saves those that are looking for items a little grief when they see how much their granny bait depreciates. It's called granny bait up here because of the post office sales ... where Mildren says to her aging husband, Fred, "Oh, look wouldn't little Johnny just love this for Xmas. And 10 years down the road little Johnny wants to sell his treasures for a little high school beer and finds out he can't even buy a 12-pack.
