You tend to think maybe people are just in a rush or they're just terrible photographers or they're just lazy but yes lesson learned.
As far as scanner images, aren't scanner bed covers usually White? Here is a scan I just did for comparison. 1200 DPI
270 million of them were melted down as a result of the Pittman Act. I have no doubt that many others were lost in the 1980 and 2011 silver run-ups.
There are LOTS AND LOTS of folks out there who can't take a clear photo to save their lives. I've seen honest hidden treasures that were hiding behind poor photos. Of course, I've also seen plenty of trash hidden behind poor photos, and bought it on multiple occasions.
awesome info, I especially like this part... Since the U.S. had no planes or tanks of its own, it had needed to buy them from the British and French. This meant the U.S. was on the hook to its erstwhile allies for a considerable sum. America wanted to hold on to at least some of its gold reserves for the post-war period, and the European powers were desperate for fresh American soldiers in the massive war of attrition that had decimated the armies of both sides. Thus, the Americans (who had silver up to their ears) figured that Britain and France would be happy to take silver instead of gold as settlement for the debts.
Not as much as the discovery of bags of the 1903-O in the Treasury release of the 60's. Until then, it was thought to be very rare. Chris
Sometimes that's true. And other times they're trying to hide something. Occasionally there are coins that are actually much nicer than what the photos suggest. You just never know for sure.
