SQGuy, You're right about the KS error. I wouldn't have cared if the other four SQ's had come back BB'ed. It was a pleasant surprise on the KS, though, because I was anticipating a 70. It was the first and only time that I've ever seen an error coin 70UCAM. As for the percentage of 70's, it doesn't matter whether you submit 5 or 500 coins. The graders call them as they see them, but I've learned by examining enough silver proofs before and after grading, whether or not one will garner a 70. I'm still working on the cameo aspect. To my knowledge, NGC doesn't publish any stats on specific grades other than those found in their Census. It's possible that they might for internal purposes, but I think it could be a "double-edged sword" if they were to make such information available to the public. Of course, if anyone had enough free time on their hands, they could tally all of the numbers from the Census and develop the percentages. Yeah, right! Chris
It takes lots of experience to see the difference of 69's and 70's. I have been submitting coins for over 2 years and I am just starting to get very good at it. I bought 10 2009 Silver proof sets and looked at all of the coins to find the 70's. I sent in 1 Lincoln 2 Jefferson Nickels 2 Roosevelt Dimes 3 Kennedy Half Dollars 11 Presidential Dollars Out of 19 coins that I sent in 16 came back PF70.
Way to go, Jaime! I'm really only concerned with the silver proofs, so you've definitely got a leg up on me with the other denominations. I'm glad to see that you finally made it back into the site. Chris
Don't be so skeptical, it's been done. 'Course the last time that I can remember it being done was before PCGS publicly admitted that they would very rarely, if at all, assign the 70 grade to avoid having to honor their guarantee later. Immediately after that they changed their policy and with some series the percentage of 70's shot from 0.001% to almost 60.00% at one time. NGC hit 80.00% at one point. But again, that was with 1 particular series.
I'm not being skeptical. It's just that I'm a born procrastinator. The reason that I likened publishing the stats to a double-edged sword is that while the information might attract those who are seeking the high grades, it could also be a turn-off to other veterans who take a dim view of the 70's "propaganda". Chris
Yeah I have started to get pretty good.......I can't wait for the 2010 set. I still have my hardest time with the Lincoln cents. Roosevelt dimes are the easiest!!
That's because they are so small that it is easy to view an entire side of the coin in one fell swoop? ..........but I'd get a headache looking at them! Chris
Don't misunderstand, it wasn't done by the TPG, private individuals did it. I did one on Bust halves myself some years ago.
