The break in the west side looks like the space between the ball on the tail and the curve of the "S" to me. Also the center of the mark looks raised as if it were the diagonal of the "S".

But I am looking at a pic on my computer, not the coin of course. Sometimes, I can tilt a coin under my usb microscope and pick up the shadows that will show me what it is, when I am having trouble ID'g one.

    I hope it's a "D", but I don't believe it is.

If you get it authenticated, please let us know.

I'd like to see it in hand, too... tough to tell from those images.

Can you try to get a shot of it through a loupe? If you don't have one... why not? They're only like $5-$10.

I tried snapping a photo with a regular magnifying glass but I could'nt get a decent shot. And if you had read my original post you would have seen that my guess was an S mintmark. And I'll go right out and buy myself a jewelers loupe the next chance I get. Would'nt want to disappoint you again ..Thanks Dad ..

Buy yourself a USB digital microscope, they are really cheap now and you can get really good results.
That mintmark would show up as clear as day and the full size of your PC screen.

I got a cheap one on eBay for about $30. Had to find some software to use it with my Win7 that I downloaded for free. Man, I can really see the coins now ! It has a snapshot capability as well as motion. I don't know the specifics, but it says 200x. Anyway, once the digital image is saved, that can be blown up again ! I think you can probably get a 2000x magnification or something like that where it pixilates ?

Sorry for the unnecessary thread guys...after removing more crud this morning it is clearly an "S".... Thanks for all of the input, it is still a great find for my collection. That "D" 001.JPG is still out there somewhere ...

Nothing unnecessary about it at all sir. This is what we are here for.

I was hoping I was wrong too, if it helps. :) It wouldn't have hurt my feelings for you to get lucky.
