I MADE A DEVICE TO FLATTEN STAPLES

    I just use the blunt end of the handle of a small, flat-head screwdriver to squish them down. And the driver side makes for an easy way to pry the staples.

    I use non-PVC 2x2 flips, no steel staples to mess with.

    I use the flat blade of a medium-sized standard screwdriver. An old butter knife works well also.

    Hey I'm not knocking on him.
    It's a good idea to serve a purpose and possibly didn't cost him anything but a little tinker time.
    I still flatten my staples out with a linesman's pliers.
    I saw a flat clinch stapler at a local discount store for $6 and seriously though about buying it as a dedicated 2x2 stapler.

    You can also buy smaller pliers at hobby shops.
