That&nbsp; year, there were several made with the obverse die from a 20 centavo&nbsp; early on, because the 5 centavo die didn&#039;t arrive with the initial&nbsp; shipment. </p><p><br /></p><p>Today, those mule pieces (so named because they are the offspring of two&nbsp; unmatched dies, like a horse and a donkey produce a mule) command a&nbsp; pretty high premium. </p><p><br /></p><p>The problem is that I can&#039;t figure out how to tell the mules apart from&nbsp; the normal 5 centavos. The coins are very similar in diameter (the type&nbsp; one 5 centavo was 21.3 mm and the type two 20 centavo was 23 mm) and&nbsp; have essentially the same pattern even though one is apparently 7% larger. I have two 1918S 5 centavos - how can I tell if they&#039;re mules or not?</p><p><br /></p><p>Are there any diagnostics that you know of?
