This is without question my favorite Belgian coin (wish I owned one!). The detail is wonderful, and there's something fascinating about the lion turning his head and looking back over his shoulder.
yup it's the earliest date. it cost me $750.00 it is my most expensive coin to date. it is a grade rarity. hence the huge price tag. I have never regretted it either. I never get bored looking at it.
Copper, copper, where have you been? I've been to London to visit the queen. Copper, copper, what did she say? You're much too worn, please go away. Copper, copper, what did you do? I went home and dreamed of being minted anew.
This one is too common and too new to have much numismatic value, but nevertheless one of my favorite 20th century copper coins. 33mm, with some nice blue-ish toning on the reverse that's only hinted at in this pic.
These big Brazilian 80 reis strain the largest size of 2x2s. I also have a Chinese 200 cash that's too big for a 2x2 but I don't have a picture.
The pyatka or 5 kopek is a large crown sized coin that is quite a contrast to the polushka or 1/4 kopek on top.
@chrsmat71 - I love that 1802 Swedish skilling. Have always liked the edges on those, too. And there's some great "ghosts" of an undertype showing really strongly on that one! I didn't know they were overstruck. That Siberian piece with the dramatic clip is cool, too. I had one of those in similar grade, but without the clipped planchet. I've always been a fan of the Cartwheel coppers. Love that Soho-style thing with the incuse lettering in the raised rim. You'll note the Liberian cent in my previous post has that, too. A Katanga cross, I believe. Have never seen one in hand. Looks like it would make a formidable missile weapon, if thrown overhand! A "coin" you could go hunting with, out in the bush!
Great post. I have the 2 centesimos version of that series. So many outstanding coins came out of South America in the 1800s.
