I just went to a local coin show and bought, for really cheap prices, a Uncirculated 1957B US 1 dollar bill with blue seal (Silver Certificate) for $4.00 1936 Buffalo Nickel for $0.80 2 US 1940 Jefferson nickels for $.30 each US 1940 Quarter for $3.30 1953 US Dime for $1.00 1902 US penny for ??? I think it was under $1 So now I have a HUGE coin collection (mostly world coins) I like US coins more than world coins although I have a 1863 Italian coin AND...... 1855 Italian coin so I have some really old stuff, and my dad asks me what is the point of coin collecting? and I reply "Because I LOVE old stuff and someday if not even now this stuff could be worth a LOT of money" Thanks!
Welcome to the neighborhood @-Andy- ! First, Google some of the events that occurred in those years, i.e., "Historic Events of 1855". Then, tell your dad about some of the interesting things that happened at that time. Chris
Very well done Andy, you actually bought the 1953 Dime for less than the value of its silver content. By a hair anyway, but still a good thing Coins have taught me a lot about our history! Historical events from specific dates, important people, places & things. It is a hobby full of people that enjoy history, but also numbers....there is a lot of math involved when it comes to budgeting purchases, understanding value and rarity. I think your Dad should be tremendously proud you've taken up an interest in something which has usually only been avidly pursued by the aristocracy. They call it the hobby of Kings after all! Buying coins can be a great savings account for future years too....when you buy them at the right prices, which you obviously have done. Also, don't be shy to ask for opinions from those coin dealers. In my experience, by asking, most folks will try to make sure you get a good piece worthy of keeping for many years to come!
I just got back from the show too . I also drop a coin off for grading too .. Was a great Holiday weekend too .............
Sorry for the duplicate replies, as you can notice I'm new to the forum otherwise I could delete the post. -Andy-
