I want people’s opinions on what they think PCGS graded this. Also, a question. Do you consider this coin to have positive eye appeal with the dark surfaces? I’m a bit concerned I overpayed because I fell in love with this one. The seller was a pleasure to deal with.
VG-08 Although, they are lenient with key coins and VG-10 or F-12 would not surprise me, but all things being equal it looks like VG-08.
I feel that the dark surfaces gives the coin contrastive character. I also feel that it helps to provide some context that the coin was likely buried somewhere for a time before being found and dug up.
It's always a guess how PCGS will grade a dark coin. I'll go with VG something. Never bought a 16-D. Just too darn much money.
I'm kind of on the fence about the toning. On old Mercs this seems natural. And if it were soaked in acetone some of the non tone crud might come off, but reveal flaws that will not be able to be covered again. So I would leave it alone and normally I am OK with this look, but this is a 16-D a special coin and IDK if I want it looking like every other old Merc in the cigar box.
Same here... a complete set except for that one. My P&S 16s look about like the OP's D but I didn't pay much for them.
VG-8. Just can’t see higher than that. The “circulated cameo” is appreciated by many; I think it’s OK but wouldn’t pay extra for it. Steve
I'll go with the VG8 crowd. I like the darker field, lighter devices look on 19th century stuff, but not so much on Mercury dimes. I could see a TPG saying VG detail, environmental damage on a bad day.
