"O clear and irreproachable conscience, how bitter is the sting of one small lapse?" -Dante Just do what you think is right. I'd want to give him a little more. Especially, now, it's the season.
My opinion: Baloney. That is justification for taking advantage of someone for no reason except satisfying gloating. The "guilty conscience" line you establish, exactly how is one action different from the other? Logic dictates it isn't, except for self gratification and justification so you feel you have taken the moral high ground. Self respect and self dignity has to be front and center always, not for convenience. No accusation here, simply an observation and reason I sleep well.
It may not be coins but I have been self employed for over 40 years. I own a cleaning service and many customers over the years have handed me the keys to their business without fear of loss. As a man said to me many years ago, "There are 2 kinds of people. 1 you can trust to do the right thing when nobody is looking the other you can't trust with a dozen eyeballs on them." James
So it's decided. I'll give him an extra $80. $50 for the 32's and an extra $30 for the others. I haven't been able to get any really good pictures of these yet, but I pulled a few out of the album and snapped some pics when I had some downtime earlier with the sunlight gleaming in. 1960(P) 1959(P) - I whoopsied on this one and missed the reverse... 1947(P) I'll have more pictures to post throughout the evening and weekend, including what I think may be proof coins from a few years. I just wanted to get these out here to show them off. This was an album put together with care throughout the years, and deserves a little recognition for his hard work. Enjoy!
Also, although I'm very inexperienced when it comes to estimating grades for Washington quarters, I swear some of these are Gem with a select few that might be "Superb" Gem. At least a handful would likely get a + grade due to the toning, I believe.
This was my thought too. Go in there and explain the situation. If he has something else you want, offer to pay x $ above what he's asking for it, in order to make up for his earlier loss, or you will pay y $ more for the other purchase, no strings attached. He might prefer to unload something else at a bigger profit rather than only get some extra cash and still have the inventory to move. Either way, I agree with finding a way to do the right thing. If it didn't bother you, it never will, but if it bothers you, it always will.
Strait up! Looks like you have some nice toners there @no regrets Still waiting on those 32. The 34" has a Light, Med and Heavy motto. The D has a standard and a Heavy motto. I would be checking for RPM's, DDO's you name it with that set.
Speaking of guilty consciences....... Sniping on eBay is fun for several reasons. Saw a MSPL Morgan coin I really liked but it was bidding too low. I really liked it but really didn't need or want it. So I bid high enough to get the bid to a respectable level and bid a little higher than suggested value. The seller should thank me. I just cost some low baller with my late sniper bid about 40% over what they were banking on getting it for. Win win, I didn't get it, don't have to buy it, some bottom feeder who got it may be seething at the moment.
Another thought is that he will recognize a customer with integrity and say my bad, don't worry about it, and refuse the extra cash. I've never run a buy low sell high business but I feel like that's what I would say in his position - I got what I wanted for it so don't worry about it. At which point, you could offer some free expertise about coins that pass through his store. Let us know how it turns out!
I was able to get some pics of the 32's but still need to transfer, crop and resize them for uploading. I should have them up tonight though, I think.
1st you have to examine the legitimacy of the mintmarks on the 32D and 32S. He got the price he wanted. Anyone with a Whitman folder could easily look up the current value of the coins online. If you didn't buy it, then some B and M coin shop would have paid him even less. If your conscience is bothering you, then give him some extra money.
It's the relationship with the guy that cinched it for me. Coincidentally my buddies and I got our big start with an old hobby shop guy who sold antique jewelry and such, so I kind of know the feeling, too. Merry Christmas to him. There's no way they or I'd have ripped our guy, even as young spoiled brats.
I would never give a seller more money after the fact. It might make him feel bad and he might feel like I didn't give him enough. Instead I throw a lot of business his way until I feel like we're closer to even. I still get the best prices I can but if I overpay a little I count it toward what I underpaid.
I am respectfully disagreeing with you on this one. This seller is pretty knowledgeable on the bulk of his inventory with the exception of the coins. He trusts me not to undercut him, which I essentially did right from the get-go. But I wanted a closer look at what I got this time because a big portion of the coins I've gotten from him were just culls... or maybe slightly better every now and then. His inventory he's been selling me recently is his late-father's collection, and this quarter album was definitely something he was carefully selecting each coin for after the 40's or so. I've gotten to know him pretty well over the past year and I simply can't live with myself to betray his trust in me because I would rather have a profit somewhere down the line, if I ever decide to sell these. I've become so familiar with him that he even let me walk out the door while still owing him money for these coins (in addition to the other stuff purchased that day) so when I return to pay my debts, I'm sure he will be happy to accept more money when I tell him this album deserved more than just cull-price.
