just because a coin is slabbed does not make it real .

Not sure what your point is. While nothing is truly absolute, getting it slabbed and verified by professional's is just about as far as you can take it, and it will certainly be accepted as authentic by the numismatic community. It would also command a hefty price tag at auction. Sooooo, what does your statement have to do with the price of tea in China?

I lined up what you submitted to an actual 1943 cent. I do see a difference with the 4 and the 3.

Good one superimposing the date...that gives a better visualization for comparison. I definitely see the 4 being off since it is not straight. By that, I would probably be more convinced as to it not being authentic.

Why does the value of the coin effect the price for grading ?

I thought these guys graded like 10 coins a minute anyway !

How would I know what the fee is before it is graded on some coin ( like a Morgan $) that could vary by 10X between a 63 or 65 ?

If you look at a PCGS submission form, they do have "Rarity" at $250 Security Plus Only service an "Ultra rarity " at $600 Security Plus only, there is no calculation for value for the service. Where you have to calculate value is for the insurance charge when they return them to you. This is the last column "Declared Value" . If you submit one coin and declare it worth 1,000 or less, you pay 16.95 insurance & postage. If your one coin is worth 100,001 , you pay $129.95 postage and insurance. Your gamble.

If it is sent USPS.....seems like you'd never collect a high value anyway ?

I dontI believe the insurance is in case it is lost upon sending it back....then again, i dont believe it should warrant a $600 charge for the coin either.

Both of these slabs are genuine. Both 1804 large cents are fake. In both case the TPG had to eat crow and pay off on their guarantee. So just because a coin is slabbed doesn't mean for sure that it is genuine. It's a VERY good indicator but not infallible.

Dollar's image is fairly conclusive that it is not real. The 4's are different but the 3's are not the same. Note on the real one the 3 visually appears to lean forward (optical illusion) but it doesn't on the OP coin.

I think we all know of circumstances where a non-genuine coin was put into a slab. The point here is that TPG's are the best overall accepted method of determining whether or not a coin is genuine. MUCH more so than anyones opinion here.

I have this penny in my possession now, it’s 3.11 grams, but sticks to magnet. How can I post photos to this thread

If it sticks to a magnet, there is no need to go any further, it is most likely plated.

There have been more than 40 threads similar to this old one from 2012. Welcome!

If you look at the top of your page there is a search box that goes a long way back. To just see new threads for your question, fill it in like this

Search child forums ( click for yes)

Then click search and it should bring up about 2 pages of recent threads. The more recent are important because you can see the odds quite disfavor it being real and the recent threads have better diagnostics to separate from Chinese or other mints ( counterfeits).

Its tricky the first few time to search, but you will catch on.
