I was surprised to find out that Coin World was interested in interviewing me about South Korean coins. Jeff Starck of Coin World was kind enough to feature me in their podcast You can hear it here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/273189/11244989?t=1517
Buy Mark's Book if you have not done so, yet. Very reasonable price, with wonderful historical information. Best I have read since Edger Mandel about Korean numismatics, and fills the large gap of information on Modern Era Korean Coinage that has gone wanting for so long.
Ah! A quote from General Kang... Good choice. He was not only a soldier, but also a diplomat and later Prime Minister under Presdident Roh Tae-woo.
Congrats on your guest podcast premiere, Mark. My son also taught English in Korea. He did it for five years.
UPDATE: I was just on the World of Coins' September Podcast event! I gave them a shortened version of my presentation on South Korean coins. The previous two presentations on Bengal punchmarked coins and "modified" tokens were really good. If interested, you can join World of Coins and enjoy such presentations. It is a forum site similar to CT.
Those are nice honors, Mark. Congratulations! And thank you for stepping up in the name of numismatic education.
Great interview! You are very well spoken and I'm jealous that you can speak Korean. I also agree that a work on later date Japanese coins is very lacking. I would imagine most of the source material still exists. Korean coins should do well going forward in no small part because of your book. Thanks for the link and effort.
I do not "speak Korean" in any high conversational level, no. I have gotten a lot better with reading Korean numismatic texts, however! Yes, with Japan the next step is to find those Japanese sources that have covered this topic in the past. With such a literate society with some number of collectors in that country, that should be possible... Just not sure it would be me, though! Thanks for your kind words!
