Haven't been buying many Ancients lately, however have been buying a lot from the other side. a coin that i've been wanting Mr. Crabs and with $300 off, had to add him to the group. Sicily, Akragas..425-406 B.C. AE, Trias AKPA behind eagle perched R. on dead hare( Sorry SteveX i know how you hate dead animals). Mr. Crabs and crayfish,( i say shrimp). Green earthen highlights. Big Thick coin, 30mm x 21.22g. Please post any eagle, hare, Mr. Crabs and Shrimp coins you have.
I'm new to ancients how much before the $300 off. I don't anything about ancient pricing I just pay what the coin says to me LOL
This coin came from a vcoins dealer which had it on sale for $200 off a few weeks ago, i all most bought it then, so i kept an eye on it and the other day they had another $100 off so i bought it.
Congrats, Eng... sounds like you got it at a fire sale! I've got one of these Sicilian four-critter coins, but mine is weak on the dead rabbit side.
I bought one cheaply from an Austrian auction a couple of weeks ago, apparently it might be three years before I get it.
Very nice score getting a Akragas coin!! Totally impressed my friend. Those are like dream coins. Especially the ARs.
Wow, that's a gorgeous OP-score (congrats, Eng!!) Yes, I am not a huge fan of seeing dead animals, but I am a huge fan of these sweet Sicily Akragas coins!! ... as you probably already know, I have an example with a cool c/s on it ... BEFORE AFTER
A well known 'high rated' ebay seller had a coin I wanted listed at $3,750 with the 'make an offer' option. Obviously I didn't pay full price. Anyone care to guess how much I paid for it?
What is the coin? Hard to make a guess without seeing it. If it's our favorite seller. probably less than 10%.
Which is another way of saying 'still too much'? This whole thread is based on a number game. $300 off of a coin priced $400 over reasonable is not a bargain. Doubling prices and having a 25% off sale --- sad?
Sorry, that would help. I wouldn't have gone for it, but it's the only one from this issue I've come across and would've had a long wait for another. And Doug, my coin was no bargain either. I paid full retail.
Yes, we have to grab things when they are available. Mine is the common Rome and I paid too much for such a worn one.
Doug is right, it is a numbers game to be sure. Value is like beauty. It is definitely in the eye of the beholder. There can be many reasons why a coin is priced as it is. Price paid, perceived grade, perceived value, etc. My problem is that I often attribute and price my coins BEFORE I photograph them, which is a mistake. When I view the photos after the fact I have to re-evaluate them. Sometimes I shake my head in wonder at why I though such and such coin was an EF and thus worth $150 when the photo clearly shows it is VF and worth $60-65. Many times I dont make new tags, so that may further confuse the situation for collectors when they get them in the mail.
