I don't understand why the Mint put's the date & mint mark on the edge

This is so stupid. The Mint is an agency of the Department of Tresury and couldn't care LESS if they make or lose money as long as the US Treasury checks for their salery continues to be cashed in their bank account. They are a bunch of government beauracrats who if where put in charge of a real business would run it into bankrupcy in short order.

If you don't like how the Mint operates BLAME CONGRESS. They can only do exactly what congress tells them to.
