I don't understand why CT-er's list Silver on eBay

I am amazed that everyone still responds to detecto's posts. To expect a rational response from an irrational person, makes you irrational.

I think sometimes it's the thrill of the unknown.

 

Every online board I have ever participated in has a person who "inspires" conversations. How boring would the place be without them?

 

Back to the original question, I think that selling silver or other coinage through CT is difficult because although many of the members are relatively newbies, most are more sophisticated about value than eBay's . This also makes for the rash of " make me an offer" postings rather than a price ( $ value, spot, spot + 5%, etc). Shipping also makes a difference in overall cost, and unless it is included ( usually not as silver is heavy). I buy bullion on CT , never on ebay, but from people who say upfront, the price and conditions.

 

Agreed...I am quickly ran off my for sale ads that say "make an offer." I want to know what price you want...if I know it right up front I can decided on my own if it's worth it to me and if so I will jump on it.

 

I also think part of the problem here is that we are a coin collecting community, with a few dealers.

It's easy to buy coins from people who are not collectors, but collectors want full value, which I don't blame them.

 

OP I guess you know now why people list on eBay; considering the amount of money you collected

 

Maybe some do...but most experienced collectors understand the economics of collecting.

But, this thread is about buying silver...not buying coins. There is a major difference there and the thought process is different.

Actually, I agree with him a fair portion of the time. I think he's misguided and may not understand everything he is talking about...but he is sure passionate.

I don't think he's crazy or anything. Just a young guy with a lot of ideas but not a lot of background knowledge.

 

He needs to get into politics.

 

He's entertaining which I like people say that about me too tho I gotta tone it down a lot here first cause I can't type to save my life and second caus my language talking would get me a lifetime ban in under a minute

I think the problem here is that the younger generation is screwed because of the programming that exists both in public schools and in TV.

I can't even talk to people my age. Most often kids my age are empty, have no thought process, and are just a walking, talking shell of a human.

Most older people (40+) have no problem understanding me and usually agree with me, I don't know if that's something that comes with age, or if my theory of devolution is correct and we are heading to a real life adaptation of the movie Idiocracy and children that are empty-headed, entirely devoid of any self-reasoning are being pumped out at an alarming rate.

Of course all the additives and other crap they put into food that gets fed to toddlers who are sat in front of a TV all day sans a mother who is too busy working to keep the family a float due the economy probably doesn't help help with early mental development, either.

However I never seen such a cowardly, spineless bunch of people that is known as generation Y, or as I like to call it, generation WHY?

It seems that status quo today exists as "we don't like it, but we are too chicken to do anything about it, so I guess we will have to put up with it".

If you don't believe me, go out in public and experience it for yourself, people get crapped on all the time and do little about it.

This is what's wrong with our country, no one really likes how it is, but they do nothing to stand up and change it.

Getting back to eBay, even though they treat a lot of sellers like crap and play kiss butt to the big sellers, people still use them.

eBay is not the only place to sell. People act like before 1995, there was nowhere else to sell anything.

You don't need eBay to sell, sure eBay might be a wider audience , and your item may bring more, and you might sell that widget from that one movie no one has ever heard of, but you do not NEED eBay.

There are many other venues to sell, both in real life, and online, and quite a few of them still exists, all though many got crushed by eBay (remember Yahoo Auctions?).

I may give items to have other people sell (in this case my parents), which illogically gets counted as "me selling", which is kind of hard to do, since I don't actually list the items.

I hate eBay. I don't hate just eBay, I hate quite a few people who sell on it, and when I sold, I hated the people who bought stuff.

I hated the people who anytime you shipped them something, they would find some imaginary flaw within the item, and then demand you give them a partial refund, which is just a nice way of getting something from you cheaper.

I hated the people who bought something, and never, ever paid for it. They do this to many other sellers before eBay finally bans them.

I hated the buyers who sole function is to buy things from other people, just so they could complain about it. Usually these people were on a "list" that other sellers would warn about and then you could block.

There are people like that, living within the confines of their grandma's basement, saturating under the dull glow of the fluorescent lighting, hoping to make another seller's worst nightmare come true.

I know you may not believe me, but I don't care. There are, in fact, buyers who somehow enjoying making other sellers lives miserable.

If buyers weren't bad, it was sellers, who often were scammers, but talented enough to word themselves to fly under eBay's radar.

You won't believe the amount of crap I saw gotten away with, and little was done about it.

But people seriously need to get rid of the notion that without eBay, they can't sell.

That is utter BS.

I don't NEED eBay, and that's why I let my parents list stuff, they sell it, for me.

I do a majority of my selling at flea markets and other venues.

You might think all of my business gets done on eBay, but in reality maybe 15% of what gets sold on eBay makes up the total volume.

I only have my parents sell things that can generate a higher sell-through rate due to a wider audience.

So that's why I want eBay, but I don't need eBay, and if one day my parents say "ok Tim, no more eBay for you", then it's no big deal.

If you don't like eBay, then stop using eBay, and stop giving them fee money.

There are many, many other places to sell besides eBay.

If you want to know why I got "kicked off", I had 115 positive feedback, and 2 negative feedback were posted to my account, resulting in a 21 day suspension.

One of the negative feedback was a George Foreman grill, like new in the box, I sold for 99 cents, shipped. Surprisingly, no one else bid on it.

Even though I lost money on shipping it, the buyer claimed that during transit, the ABS lid (the same thing car bumpers are made of, just to give you an idea of durability) shattered.

Refunded his money, still left a red dash.

After my 21 day ban, the next item I listed came back negative. This was over 7 years ago (Yes, I was 14 when I started selling on eBay, deal with it) so I don't remember what exactly happened and they decided that even though I had 115 positive feedback, 3 negative was just way too many (even though the mega-sellers have tens of thousands), and gave me a lifetime ban.

I will say this, out of the 3 "problem transactions", I tried everything to make it right, but since eBay kisses the ground buyers walk upon, there isn't nothing I could do.

I tried to argue, but you can't argue with stupid, you can't fix stupid, and stupid is why our country is in a possibly unrecoverable depression.

Kids today are too obsessed with Miley Cyrus or Justin Beiber while plugging away with their noises buried in their smartphones to care about the world around them.

I honestly fear about the younger generation today.

I worked for Target for 3 months in '11 during the black Friday season, and most of the managers were younger than the workers.

It irritated this piss out of me, because not only did these twenty-somethings act like they knew everything the most seasoned managers would know, they tried coming up with "solutions", that spat in the face of the logic.

To them, logic didn't exist, their solutions of "throwing it at the the wall and seeing what sticks" didn't work for 99.9999 of the time, and made the other workers look like complete and total idiots.

Target called their customers "guests", as if they were going to stay for dinner or something, and you can see how well their "logic" protected their data systems during the breach that occurred around Black Friday.

A customer is a customer, but this type of left field, off the wall thinking, and having to put up with it, is one of the reasons I left.

Getting back on topic, I've sold many things on here before, so if your not having any luck, maybe your asking too much.

If someone can buy it cheaper somewhere else, they will. Sorry to say such things, but it's the truth.

Tim...let me ask you this. Do your parents sell your items and give you the money for it (at least most of the money)? Do you tell them which of your items you want sold and for how much?

Even if you don't list them on eBay and it's not your account...this is still YOU selling on eBay. There is nothing illogical about that. You can try and dance around that all you want...but it's still you my friend.

It's OK to not like eBay...it's also OK to sell on eBay. It's even OK to do both. But don't lie to us and don't lie to yourself.
