I did it again... I swore to myself that I wouldn't buy any more 1878 (P) Morgan dollars but this one... I've been eyeing this one up for a few weeks now. It isn't necessarily even a true upgrade because my current slot is filled with a mid-low MS coin already (61-63) but I'm a sucker for PL (or super shiney) Morgans. I'm beginning to dislike my decision to buy this solely because I feel like it's my obligation to identify the VAM, and 1878 (P) is not what I consider "fun" vamming. Regardless, I'll figure it out eventually... especially if anyone here is bored and cares to chime in. The nostril is annihilated, no disconnected leaves, doubling on LIBERTY, missing wing feathers (eagle's right side), no die cracks, doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM, high 1 and doubled, maybe doubling on "878", maybe slight doubling on motto... I really need to stop buying 1878 (P) Morgans. Here's a small batch of pictures from my phone from earlier. I'll post some with more details from my scope sometime tonight after I pull them and crop them down to size. Sorry for the apparent obsession with the obverse pictures. Reverse of '78, long nock, parallel feathers. Should be simple to VAM, but I'm hitting a wall lol. The first 8 pictures are in sunlight, last 2 at the dining room table. Much clearer pictures to come soon.
Obviously, it is a Double Rim Clip. That should narrow down the VAM choice. (Don't hit me....you left me an opening, so it is your fault)
My big ol' butcher's thumbs really help, right? Haha! (I definitely cropped out at least 95% of my thumbs... I think)
Therapy. Therapy is recommended but almost always overlooked by those who need it. I cannot stress more the need for you to consult someone (therapist) and engage in useful thought regarding your recent actions noted in the above thread. In closing, I will state my current thoughts regarding the matter..... Roses are red Violets are blue I'm schizophrenic And so am I
Ok, here's some of my scope pictures. Just day 1, so there was a bit of a rush to get them. I'm sure I'll post lots more in the near future once my work dries up completely. But for now, here's some pics. Ah nuts... My laptop is disagreeing with how I want to upload. Here's the obverse and reverse. I have lots more to put up but this old beast requires a restart. These were taken with my scope at the absolute lowest light settings, btw. Secondary lighting was off and scope light was minimum, and it still reflected the light like it was at full intensity.
I've got LOTS more pictures to upload but they're 52MP that needs to be dropped down in file size to fit here. These will do for now, I guess. This has to be the most reflective Morgan I own now. It's like a mirror almost, at least where it hasn't been worn down from a bit of circulation.
Here's my first attempt at uploading pictures here that have been resized through MS Paint. Hopefully these come through ok...
Before I go and clutter this up with more pictures, did these upload ok? Relatively clear and whatnot? Also, technically, I paid $30 for this coin. But that was because the owner was busier than usual and lumped this and an 1895-O together with a little discount. $530 for both of them. Traded in $13 face value of 90% for $266 off, leaving $264 cash out of pocket for both. And the 95-O is definitely an upgrade.
I'm actually kind of shocked that it was still there in the display case. I couldn't resist the shine anymore!
You forgot to mention the Bedrock of the targeted therapy for the referenced affliction is to willingly and selflessly and without compensation give the subject piece(s) to a stranger that acknowledged the physical oddity displayed by the OP, by coveting the piece to the level of an interpretation of the image by a stranger as a Borg infestation. In this Thread, and applying the stated criteria, it appears the coin has to be sent to.......wait....wait.... CHARLEY!!!! Give me Precious now, to begin the healing process. ( I can blarney with the best of em', so any other phony claimants back off!)
Your scope takes pretty good photos. Send it in to VSS and have John attribute it. 6 bucks plus postage and insurance. A really good deal for VAM collectors. The coins with big clashes are fun to research. Some of the rest of them, not so much, migraine headaches. I noticed there is something going on between the eagle's right wing and the S in states has a pickup point to something. What it is, I have no idea. Sometimes PUPs lead to nothing or aren't referenced in the literature though.
I just actually finished up the forms and have been emailing him a little about return shipping. And yeah, this scope is crazy in what it can do. Any images that appear to be blurry is just user-error, but I'm trying to learn it quickly enough so that I can share my pics. I'm also sending in what may be a discovery coin (1897 Morgan) that was posted here and on CONECA. I've matched a few pickups between several VAM's but haven't been able to nail a particular one down. If it comes back as an actual discovery, then that would be fantastic. I've spent a decent amount of time on trying to identify the VAM and have failed every time. It's mildly circulated but still has plenty of detail to it but I just can't make up my mind. Hopefully he spends a little time on it to go through the gauntlet instead of seeing just a couple pups and say it's ::this, that, or the other:: VAM. Even some people at CONECA agreed it should be sent in, which is why it will be in the mail very soon!
The closest match I've gotten so far was VAM-83 (IIRC) but the nostril doesn't match up correctly. And it appears to have doubling on the reverse that is not mentioned anywhere that I've searched. I suppose I should upload the reverse photos since I've gotten confirmation that the pictures came out ok.
In case nobody noticed it, the polished fields go so far into the devices that you can see them reflecting the scope light (on the lowest setting) between the hair curls, even inside of the big old mess of locks
