I like toned proofs if I can find them cheap enough. This was on the bay with blurry photos that appear to be hiding nice color. Wish me luck
Many, if not most of these sets are toned (especially the coppers), owing to improper storage at the mint / inferior packaging materials. British collectors consider this damage, but if you like toned proofs, these sets are great value, and oftentimes present fantastic hues. I myself (especially while dealing in the UK), never understood why you would discount for such beautiful tone... Hope it meets your expectations!
If I were a British collector I'd consider it damage also as it reflects that the BRM had a miserable quality control that sometimes rivalled the Goznak produced mintsets in the USSR for lack of a sterile environment etc. I have some 1970 proof sets that are all over the spectrum colour wise. With the USSR mint sets you could end up with some lovely toned coins whilst others were just plain corroding before your very eyes.
Can I see your toned proof sets? I bought these raw on ebay. The 1c is tied for top pop and the 2c is the single top pop.
I buy off bad photos occasionally. Thing is you usually get at a good price because the pics suck. I just bought this 1749 colonial knowing full well it was no way that color but look at the details! Coin came and its dark brown tad af charcoal. Really nice coin. 58 bux. I was seeing other examples $100 or more that wouldn't stand up to this coin for anything! Guy wanted like 95? Offered him 50 .... 58 tax and shipping. Its in my colonial bin.
