I know i'm supposed to be collecting Roman coins, but the other night I couldn't resist this amazing pan-head. It was pricey, but anyway it's not my fault, I can't be held responsible for what Night-time Greg does! antgonII.jpg

Kingdom of Macedonia, Antigonos Gonatas, 277 - 239 BC
    Silver Tetradrachm
Obverse: Horned head of Pan left, lagoblon over shoulder, on boss of shield.
Reverse: Athena Alkidemos advancing left holding shield decorated with aegis preparing to cast thunderbolt, crested Macedonian helmet to left, KT to right.

Does anyone else have a Panhead to share?

    Glad you like it.

here is a little more "Roman" for you.

This denarius commemorates the defeat of the Greeks. (notice the trouncing of the Macedonian shield.)

Nice again. I don't have any Roman republic coins (except a Julius Caesar - is that considered republic era still?)

Night-time Greg has great taste in coins :D

I too love the shape and heft of these convex-obverse tetradrachms, and I love Pan :)

Hey Greg => both, your example and coin-Princess' example have "8" rays on the obverse stars (my example is a 6-ray type) ... I'm no pro, but they seem to be split fairly equally (ummm, but I'm only considering the handful of examples on this coin site ... it may be interesting to research which of the types is actually more rare)

    Smeagol - 8 ray

    Princess - 8 ray

    Oki - 8 ray

    stevex6 - 6 ray

... sure, maybe I'll do that tomorrow ...

Great coin, Greg. My experience with big, pricey silver is that you forget all about what you paid for it once you have it in your hands!

Night-time Greg? Were you in your cups or tired? I have my share of coins from not turning in when I should have. Heck, in Korea I surprised a number of times to find a package in my mailbox!
