I know i'm supposed to be collecting Roman coins, but the other night I couldn't resist this amazing pan-head. It was pricey, but anyway it's not my fault, I can't be held responsible for what Night-time Greg does! Kingdom of Macedonia, Antigonos Gonatas, 277 - 239 BC Silver Tetradrachm Obverse: Horned head of Pan left, lagoblon over shoulder, on boss of shield. Reverse: Athena Alkidemos advancing left holding shield decorated with aegis preparing to cast thunderbolt, crested Macedonian helmet to left, KT to right. Does anyone else have a Panhead to share?
Well played Greg. I dont have one to share but here is a Roman Coin of the same flavor. Macedonia, First Meris, Amphipolis Mint 167 - 149 BC. AR Tetradrachm, 16.59 g x 32 mm Obv: Diademed and draped bust of Artemis right, bow and quiver over shoulder, in the center of a Macedonian shield, Rev: MAKEΔONΩN ΠPΩTHΣ, horizontal club, monograms above and below, all within oak wreath, ref: SNG COP 1313
Glad you like it. here is a little more "Roman" for you. This denarius commemorates the defeat of the Greeks. (notice the trouncing of the Macedonian shield.) 19.3mm x 3.82 grams s.126 BC Rome Mint.
Nice again. I don't have any Roman republic coins (except a Julius Caesar - is that considered republic era still?)
Night-time Greg has great taste in coins I too love the shape and heft of these convex-obverse tetradrachms, and I love Pan KINGS OF MACEDON, Antigonos II Gonatas 277/6-239 BCE, struck after 270 BCE, Amphipolis mint AR tetradrachm, 31mm, 17.06 g Obv: head of Pan left, in center of Macedonian shield, lagobolon over shoulder; shield decorated with stars within crescents Rev: BAΣIΛEΩΣ ANTIΓONOΥ, Athena Alkidemos walking left, brandishing thunderbolt and shield; helmet left, EMP monogram right Ref: SNGCop 1200v, EMP (maybe); R. Martin, "A Third-Century B.C. Hoard from Thessaly at the ANS," ANSMN 26, 536 (same obv. die). ex Demetrios Armounta Collection
Sweet taste!! => man Greg, that's a fantastic coin!! (congrats, Smeagol) Oh, I happen to have an example as well ... wanna see it (again? ) *whatev* => thar she blows!! (again, these are very cool coin-types => you nailed it when you snagged this one!!)
Hey Greg => both, your example and coin-Princess' example have "8" rays on the obverse stars (my example is a 6-ray type) ... I'm no pro, but they seem to be split fairly equally (ummm, but I'm only considering the handful of examples on this coin site ... it may be interesting to research which of the types is actually more rare) Smeagol - 8 ray Princess - 8 ray Oki - 8 ray stevex6 - 6 ray ... sure, maybe I'll do that tomorrow ... ... I like you guys
Beautiful coin, well struck and nice details. Here's what I thought when I saw the title of the thread.
Fantastic examples on ALL posts!!! I'm still missing that specific type (pan-heads--the coins and the 'bike' LOL) and just have more modest related types of Macedonian coinage... Congrats all!!! Greg, you're 'nighttime self' is going get you into serious trouble buying such TERRIFIC coins...Have you tried a non-prescription sleep aid??
here is mine. congrats on the coin KINGS of MACEDONIA. Antigonos II Gonatas. 277/6-239 BC. AR Tetradrachm Amphipolis mint.
Hey, I found a sweet CNG link associated with these wonderful PAN babies ... => again, it seems to be quite evenly split between the 8 & 6 rays ... https://cngcoins.com/Search.aspx?IS_ADVANCED=1&ITEM_IS_SOLD=1&ITEM_INVENTORY_NUMBER=&CONTAINER_NAME=&ITEM_LOT_NUMBER=&ITEM_DESC=Antigonos II Gonatas&SEARCH_IN_CONTAINER_TYPE_ID_1=1&SEARCH_IN_CONTAINER_TYPE_ID_3=1&SEARCH_IN_CONTAINER_TYPE_ID_2=1&VIEW_TYPE=0 => ahaha ... ummm, is anybody actually interested? (*whatev*) "look what I can do"
Great coin, Greg. My experience with big, pricey silver is that you forget all about what you paid for it once you have it in your hands!
Haha I was thinking this: Night-time Greg? Were you in your cups or tired? I have my share of coins from not turning in when I should have. Heck, in Korea I surprised a number of times to find a package in my mailbox!
