There are so many mistakes in there but that one definitely stood out.

Well, not so much as it used to be, it was one of the newer auction places that people did not know about.

You have to understand, I was with my dad and his friend, the auctioneer pulled me aside when I was alone, I could tell right there that it was intimidation, as he knew that my dad and his friend knew about it too.

But what really irritates me is the auctioneer made it sound like the ordeal was my fault. If the auctioneer made a mistake, it should be his responsibility to correct it, we are talking about $300, not $3,000. In fact the auctioneer probably made $3k that night.

@Detecto92 so have we figured out what a 1/4th is yet?
I can't seem to find "quarterth" in Webster's.

Really? You're picking that to beat on?

This soon after the 4th of July, I couldn't imagine anyone stumbling over 1/4th. At least, not until this thread.

How does the auctioneer account for the winning bid since I assume that someone there is keeping track of what bidder won what and how much the winning bid was.

Those, are records which provide a detailed historical inventory of what occurred.
Sales and tax records also get generated from the public auctions so the question remains,

How did the auctioneer "account" for the discrepancy in what was recorded?
Technically, the item did not sell. Or did it?
Did the auctioneer give the $5 gold coin to the whiner for $180? If so, then this was an under the table transaction that is a strict n no for public auctions.

Was the coin lot returned to the seller? If so, then the record of the lot being sold would have to be altered. Perhaps a notation that the winning bidder didn't have the funds available?

Either way, it was rather scummy.

I'm sure if he had an account over on CU and NGC that the story would be told there as well Amanda.

Nothing like a good old Detecto thread to draw all of us close together in one spot. I don't know that I've seen this large of a variety of posters on a thread here yet!

Umm........I think it's a 750ml. They stopped using fifths and quarts decades ago. Now, they use 750ml and 1 Liter. The 750ml is 25.35 ozs. and the 1L is 33.8 ozs.

I sent the auctioneer an email. I feel like after taking to a few friends of mine, a few people on ebay, and a few people who work in the auction business, they all came up with the same answer, what that auctioneer did was wrong, and cheated me out of money.

    Here is what I sent.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't appreciate what happened Wednesday night. I won that coin fair and square. If you or any one of your associates made a mistake in the auction process, that should not be my liability. In fact if an item comes up missing during an auction, it's always the auctioneer who assumes liability to compensate the seller for their loss. Yes, I was told to not mention this ordeal again, but it has bothered me and is not something I can easily forgive. I don't feel it was in your place to intimidate me by giving the coin back to the estate. That coin is not worth $180, it's worth over $335, I am including a link to an eBay auction that shows one selling for $335, however the one I [temporarily] had in my possession the other night was uncleaned, had more detail, and books for over $375. I cannot fathom the nerve of whoever complained, but no matter what conversation took place, I was essentially screwed out of over $300. I am by no means rich, or even middle class. I don't attend auctions as a hobby, it's my source of income, and my only source of income. Due to the conversation that took place between the complainer and you, I lost out on over $300 of income that night. Income that pays for my bills. I would of been more than willing to give a fair price for that coin. Heck, I'm sure there are tons of items that sell at auction for pennies of their actual value, but that is not the buyers fault. Also, that coin was not listed on the sale bill, and was not even mentioned during the auction. So I cannot figure how you could compensate the seller for that coin, when it was not even known to begin with. I have been going to auctions since I was 6 years old, and I know within the confines of the rules of the auctioneers association, and law, that once an item is sold, without reserve, it becomes property of the buyer. It is the fault of your firm to not have listed that coin in the sale bill, it is the fault of the person who was holding stuff up that night to say what he had. However when you confronted me, making sure I was away from both my father and his friend, you spun it into making it sound like the ordeal was my fault, which it was not. Me and my father, his friend, and several people we know have spent a lot of money at your auctions over the years, but what took place Wednesday night is making us reconsider ever spending money there again. I feel highly wronged and cheated over what happened.
