Ebay: I am drinking beer and see double

    It's hard to say what a unique coin is "worth" when demand is unknown.

    If it's a rare coin needed to complete popular series - eg the portrait series of emperors - you can have some confidence about the value.

    The word 'rare' gets thrown around a lot - but it's usually quite meaningless in relation to a coin's actual value. On eBay everybody says their coins are rare - I even see the term 'unidentified rare coin' LOL

    And it's just not enough for a coin to be rare. A rare coin of Emperor Philip the Arab, or Emperor Honorius, will never be worth the same as an equally rare coin of Emperor Claudius or Tiberius. You're going to have bigger collector markets for some emperors over others that's going to play as much of a role in determining the price of a coin.
