I won this lot, final cost w/premium and shipping--- $225. It looked close to 150 coins(actually 131) in the box. There were 112 1909 VDB w/95% being VF and better, mostly better. 10 - 1909-P XF-AU, 3- 1910 XF, 1 - 1914 XF, 4 Indian cents and the coin I have uploaded. I've included a couple of pics from NGC to compare shape and location of MM. Lot that I won: https://hibid.com/lot/101286345/box-lot-of-1909-vdb-pennies/?status=winning&pn=5&q=&ref=past-bids
WOW! Congratulations! I Still don't have a 1909 VDB. Could buy one, but would much rather find one! You did GREAT for $225 ! I would have had to bid on that too!
WOW, if that's the real deal! Amazing score, if so! It happens. I let out a shout and awoke my sleeping wife, the night I found this one in 2006, in a bulk lot of Wheaties. A piece of dirt was covering the mintmark. It later graded XF40 at PCGS. So I've cherrypicked a '14-D, but have yet to ever own a 1909-S VDB, in 45 years of collecting. Congrats, if it's the real deal. I'll cross my fingers for you.
I've got the VDB, but mine lacks a mintmark. However, when acquired, this piece had an intact 111-year-old pedigree, going back to Leroy D. Zachman, the Marion, Ohio banker who saved it as part of an original roll, in 1909. Mr. Zachman's signature is on some older Ohio banknotes. His great-grandson Josh (@kazuma78) gave it to me in 2020. PCGS graded it MS65 RD. It is very special because its entire history is known. You can't say that about a lot of coins.
I see the mintage was 484K, but is there a significance to the chip/mint mark circled above? I’m reading about the mint mark placement right now…Spark @Steven Shaw
Yes. There were only 4 obverse dies used for the 09-S VDB. The mintmark location varies very slightly between each of the 4, and they are well documented. Some of them have that chip in the loop of the S. It helps confirm it is genuine.
@justafarmer do you have your overlay? It looks real close to MM-OO3 But the photo makes it look too high. By the way, @Steven Shaw I would have had to toss a couple of drinks back in celebration.
Wow. Best find reported on the forums in a while, I'd imagine. Congrats, @Steven Shaw. Do keep us updated on the outcome if you submit it.
Who the heck puts up a box of 1909 VDB cents up on a non-mainstream auction house. Someone seriously screwed themselves. How did you find out about it? Where did those coins come from?
You'd be surprised at what shows up on Hi-Bid. Besides a lot of fakes(LOL), there's some decent stuff like this: https://hibid.com/lot/97446065/-3--...--1898-/?status=winning&pn=2&q=&ref=past-bids
For all I know, someone's estate. It was a wooden cigar box, very old. The coins had to have been in it a long time or in something similar. They were all covered with tarnish. I used Blu-Bow and a Q-tip to remove it. I've used it on Indian cents before and felt confident that it would do the job, and it did. A nice sized bunch still had mint luster breaking through. I will post pictures of the coins when I am done sorting them. They will all be going on ebay eventually.
