No. It's mostly because because pointing out hypocrisy is fun. What they are doing is something that is IMHO less than 100% above board or at least appears as such on the first glance.

But we can use this as a teachable moment. I want the unknowing to see why some people (me included) say not to blindly trust TPGs and to learn to grade and evaluate coins for themselves. Here is an excellent example of how populations can be manipulated and how very big customers will get preferential grading.

I was watching Coin Vault the other night. They showed an NGC slab marked as a 2012 ASE MS 70. On the close up, the date on the coin in the slab was 2011 . ( What if none of the 2012 ASEs grade MS70? Just asking...)

That is awkward. I would think both companies had more sense to offer something that wasn't even released yet. And they're offering a guaranteed grade too, sounds pretty shady if you ask me.

Not too sure about that. Sounds like the fix is in as far as knowing how many they are getting out of their monster boxes. I personally have steered clear of ANACS, SEGS and ICG coins and ICG's and ANACS love of HSN and vice versa makes me even more nervous of them as a second teir grader. Not saying they always grade drastically wrong mind you but at least two to three weeks (assuming on time production at the mint) out and they know with certainty they have 13K+ MS70's. Sounds like HSN's money is doing too much talking there. At least some of the other entertainment tv coin shows are honest..lol they are stating they are presales based on what they think they might get. I'll give one better I saw one network show selling individual and rolls or (S) san fransisco phantom mint mark coins for 2012. REALLY??? This year's (S) was totally from left field now they thing demand is going to just boom every year to have a SF struck bullion? Am I missing some announcement that SF's are the norm now? or have replaced west point?

As to the issue earlier of no 69's or 70's in 2012. Can't happen. It's nearly impossible. As long as there are no major die changes it's business as usual. They make the same die's the same way only changing the date's or mint marks. Plus all modern coinage is done under such quality control and on newer machines that nearly all are 69 or 70's even small denomiation change and mint sets, proof sets. 5oz's ATB bullion are the exception and even then it was the sheer size of the planchets and some of the intricate designs that caused the issues not the actual minting process itself. You get that rogue 68 seeing some of the coins have to be struck just before the die is retired or there is damage/retooling done to the die but it's the exception not the norm.
