In all fairness, although I applaud your qualitative analysis, it would be interesting to see in which direction people missed on each coin as well as how many points people missed by.

I don't know about the rest, but I went back and looked at my grades to see where I missed and by how much and wouldn't ya know it, I was under on every grade. What do I think this exercise said about me? That I am a conservative grader. Poor? I don't think I'd go that far. Your sample size is a bit small.

Oh and BTW beat me down. Sometimes I could use it. :)

I am sure you think you are "funning" those who did not chose to participate in your game. Perhaps their not doing so, was a response to your "calling out" attitude. I feel everyone has the right to participate or ignore any posting without having any kind of personal remark attached to their decision. I intended to do so, but in the the other posting, I felt my participation was the price for showing I thought your "ignorent" comment was out of place, as I do here.

I specifically ignored answering of your other posts including this one, although as you noted , it wasn't because I trembled at a rebuke, as my answers were fairly close. I do feel you owe an apology to those you are trying to bully to play.

RLM - Yeah,, I know. There were a few of these type comments, but I had to put some type of final answer on the test sheet when I ran into the "if's"..... Either way, it's obvious you know what your talking about...... I'd have never guessed that baby would come back with altered surfaces,, never. It just looks like a nice brown coin to me, with a beautiful blue tone to it when put under direct light. I'd love to know how to alter a copper coin to that blue color,,, I'd do it to all of my coppers tomorrow.

Well first - as for speaking out. Some of those folks are not always on the site and do not follow every thread. So that was really uncalled for.

Second - you got my response earlier. So just to clarify:

    (1) Typical PCGS over grade at VF20. PCGS screwed the pooch on this one.
    (2) Take a better picture.
    (3) Okay I missed one.
    (4) PCGS missed another one - this coin should be genuine based off the picture.

So what I learned from this exercise - (1) PCGS over grades key date coins, but everyone already knew that. And (2) you need to take better pictures. So feel free to call me out all you want, won't phase me a bit. Even though I know I am not the best grader and not the best at telling cleaned coins from even some good photos. :)

wow,, sorry if my comments offended anyone. This was simply a silly insignificant lil' exercise that I tried to make an interesting read by imparting some colorful language... I can understand how you may find it offensive if you didn't catch my drift... for that, again, I am sorry.
To all the folks that chose to stay, as I say, in the dugout, I'm sorry if my attempt to prod you abit was out of line,, it was meant in just only. The "ignorant" line is an old saying that most, but not all apparently, probably have heard before... it's just that, an old saying, not any novel stab at anyone's character... again, sorry if anyone took it that way.
To all the folks that I labeled as "poor pcgs grader"... sorry if that offended also,,, again, just a grade on some stupid insigificant test, nothing more... in fact, most I hold a very high regard for most of those I labeled as such.... sorry if that was out of line guys... not meant with malice,, just good natured fun..

Will wrap up and let this thread die quietly now... again,, sorry.

I just saw this thread now, and thought I should point out a few things.

Whether you were taking a shot at any of the members, or not, I don't know, but from your posts it sure looked like you were. Second, anyone grading coins from photos is at a huge disadvantage. So no matter how experienced the grader, it's always a guess when trying to grade a coin from pics alone.

Lastly, you called out a bunch of people on their grades, but it doesn't seem like you posted what you thought the coins would grade. Why is that? Also, you called the 1913 Lincoln
    and
It came back questionable color. So, by your own scores you would be 0 for 1, and 10 points off, making you tied as the "worst grader".

Hey I get the edited when can I expect to get it:goof:?
There's an old saying that I have learned in the military..if you were truly sorry you wouldnt have done it:kewl:. With saying that does that mean I am upset...no not by a long shot I have better things to worry about someone talking crap (at least they're talking about me:hail:)
I really don't mind if I am off in my grading for I am new to coin collection and trying to get grading down, that's why i came to the forum:cool:...To learn and learn from the people that have been doing it for many many years:hatch:. Like someone else has mentioned it is a harder to grade through a picture then seeing it in person. there are to many What If's (like angle, lighting, flash etc) thato can potentially make a person inaccurately grade it:computer:. Also, you are asking for their opinion so there is no right or wrong here..it's what they think.

If you are that much better then I (which that is easily down :kewl::goof:) that you can make this type of "test" I hope you will be teaching me a lot of stuff :eek:cause I will starting going to you for a lot of questions and boy I can ask questions.:desk:

I understand why you did and it makes sense however the you went about doing this is unmost appreciated, unexceptable and with no regard for the respect of others:confused: If your test was so insignficant then why did you do it? So obviously you were trying to get something out of it and I am sorry for you..I really am. Do you need a hug:bigeyes:?

Thank you and have a wonderful day,

    Geez... Raider.

yes, i can see how it looked that way,, already said sorry, what more can I do to sate your appetite for appology ? Please let me know and I'll do whatever you'd like.

yes, grading by pics is not precise, I thought was a given, obvious and has been stated a million times in hundreds of posts,,, pretty sure everyone in this thread is aware of the issue.

yes, i didn't post grades,, here you go:
09s vdb - 8 pts,, thought it would come back F12,,, happily surprised.
13 - 10 pts,, thought it'd come back MS65,, BB never crossed my mind. No idea how they see questionable color.
31d - 5 pts,, I knew it was 63, but honestly would have put it in the Au range somewhere, we'll call it 58... nice strike, neat toning, but obvious wear on the high points imo,, buy maybe that's strike not wear,, I'd don't know enough to say.. anyway, 58.
31d - 2 pts,, figured it would go ms66,, I just don't see any marks on it anywhere.. I don't see how some see artifical tone in that one,, maybe the pics.

So I'm 6.25 on average.... and label myself "King of dumb grader" of the forum... and thereby offer myself an appology for labeling myself as such. ; )

The timing is wild on this as just last week I called on of the TPGing company's about applying for a job with them as a grader as new employement for me is needed and I do love me some coins!!
Well wow...things to take from this exercise (didn't know we were going to be graded on our grading) is:

    1. Have a wild west avatar if you are going to be a "good grader"
    2. Pictures are hard to grade from.
    3. It's good to be lucky.

sort of off topic, but I have heard that the tpgs, use three graders to arrive at a consensus grade, I wonder how they do that, do they take the scores and average them out? or throw out the high and low grade and go with the one in the middle, I really find it hard to believe that all three graders always arrive at the same grade, especially if they are doing it solo, maybe if it was done around a table or where each saw the others grades, if it was simply a cut and dried process there would not seem to be a need to arrive at a consensus, much like you would not need three math teachers to arrive at two plus two equals four.

this is how they do it chip:

The coin is examined and graded by multiple graders (I am not certain how many). They each evaluate the coin. When all have evaluated the coin, the coin is then given a final grade and sent to be encapsulated and the grade verified by yet another grader. If the verifier disagrees, the coin will be tagged and sent to other graders for discussion and possibly to be compared to a grading set. (grading set - a set of actual coins in grades from top to bottom for comparison purposes)

That said, it is done by several people, but independently by each one and if they all agree they ship it out slabbed, if they don't they sit down and look harder and discuss why they disagree. (Kind of like here.) As much as I don't like the TPGs, if I was going to design a system that would be as close to incorruptible as I could make it, this system would fit right in.

I'd be willing to bet my boots that bahabully is not BNB.

I am all for the sport of calling him out when I see him, but I think you should be careful before accusing people. You might just be wrong.

he lurks here and tries to post and occasionally he manages to get through the cracks and gets a post or 10 before it becomes pretty obvious who it is and the gets that id banned. Otherwise I have seen him on CU forums.

Honestly I hope that he learns to settle down a bit, learns to respect people and stops taking everything so personally, because otherwise when he wasn't being so defensive, he was an ok guy.

Well you did not offend me. I was having fun - why I ended my post with a smiley face. :) Shoooot I know I have a long way to go - even if you posted really good photos. As a matter of fact I was populating my Bust Half dansco album this morning - and found a few of the grades I posted on the cards in the holders were just way off. There were 2 or 3 I had to re-look at. Seems like all the varieties I checked matched, but a few of the grades were way off. :)

Thank you, mods, for editing this post appropriately. I had asked for it to be pulled, but your edit removes the libelous portions, and that's all I really needed.
