Of the first 10 listed here (link to eBay) how many are fake, and how can you tell? Anybody can answer.
You need to refine your search. 2 are not 1909-S. Anyhow; 1. real ICG 2. pictures too fuzzy 3. Real 4. Real 5. Not an "S" 6. Not an "S" 7. ?? 8. pictures too fuzzy 9. real ANACS 10.real ICG
I meant to say, the first 10 raw (non-slabbed) 1909-S VDB coins on that list. How would you refine out no S?
1909s vdb raw I recently bought one from a retired (25 + years) dealer\speculator & he said if I send it in and it's bad he'll give me back DOUBLE what I paid!!!! He said in his day the fakes could be spotted a mile away but these new Chinese fakes look way too good. It's nice to get real raw coins at a decent price, hope the dealers don't clean him out too fast!
This is a veri cool thread. I ma definately going to save it so when I see a 09 S VDb, I can make sure it is real. Thanks for the post
How to sell/grade 1909 S VDB I have (and have owned for 50 years) a S VDB. It was cleaned at some point before I got it. I am not sure of the grade but it has very little or no wear apparent. What is the best way to 1. Get a real valuation on this coin 2. Sell the coin.
1. Send it to NGC or PCGS (by either creating a membership on your own or finding a local dealer to send it in for you) 2. There are many websites online that attract buyers who are willing to pay top-dollar. Teletrade and eBay are two examples - however, Heritage Auctions will attract more serious and aggressive bidders.
If you are going to send it to NGC/PCGS, go to a dealer. Another alternative for NGC is simply to join eBay. Members of eBay can submit coins.
This info is excellent! And very timely if I might add. I have had the blind luck to have purchased a small lot of wheat cents containing two of the 1909 S V.D.B.'s ...they give ever appearance of being authentic coins, am going to send one in to grading company and see what happens. Is there a book that I might find that is about the mint marks and how they have changed over the years? Maybe something like the examples give...Real on one side Fake on the other?
Is there a book? No - at least not one that shows the fakes. Here is a site that shows the "S" marks used for Lincolns. http://lincolncentresource.com/San_Fransisco_Mintmark_Styles.html coppercoins.com will probably show you most of the others as the show the RPM's.
I can't seem to find any reference to ebay submissions on NGC site. The only submission options seem to be to join or submit through a dealer. I am not familiar with any dealers in my area (Seattle) and reluctant to use the unknown. Thanks.
The only time I used it, NGC walked me through it. If I remember correctly, you start on an eBay page. Here is a list of NGC APPROVED dealers in Washington http://www.ngccoin.com/services/dealer_listing.asp?state=WA
I still don't have a 1909 s vdb but I continue to look. I'm beginning to see a very disturbing trend on ebay that includes a lot of fakes in slabs from the various grading companies. Has anyone else notiiced this trend?
http://coins.about.com/od/coingradin...b-Diagnostics/ The 1909 S VDB would be a prime coin to turn up in a fake slab. Best wishes, Peter Anthony http://www.pandacollector.com/
If you stick to NGC and PCGS, I would be pretty sure you would not get a counterfeit coin in their slab. The problem might be that you would get a fake slab. Try Heritage. My guess is that you would be quite safe there.
