How to tell if an old coin has been cleaned?

The best way is to familiarize yourself with your series and what original coins look like in it. Don't blindly rely on TPGs as even the big two, PCGS and NGC, have silently netgraded coins for light cleanings in the past. Also, learn to recognize the impaired luster that often comes from cleaning. And of course, look for cleaning hairlines.
