For pure (non-binder) storage of coins in Air-Tites consider Tube-tites [the link is to an eBay store] These are after market items, not made by the Air-Tite Holders manufacturer. For more 'elegant' looking presentation consider Air-Tite Coin Albums or Air-Tite Storage Boxes.
I was thinking of getting an aluminum case for them, but the case has 2x2 trays, but I don't know if the fit will be ok. Guess there is only 1 way to find out I have to buy a set of trays. http://www.ihobb.com/cgi-bin/ws400CS.cgi?category=ALUMINUM+COIN+CASES&pcat=safe.html
Looks nice. I don't know the product but if it serves your needs and as it looks practical for travel then maybe this is the way to go. For home storage (no traveling) it feels a bit excessive, IMO.
I like the fact that I can store it very compactly and take it out very fast to look at all the coins. I mostly buy bullion for collecting so I don't care about returns and am more then willing to spend. Also I have been reading some other threads and saw that you are knowledgable about air-tites, is http://www.air-tites.com/ a legit place to buy air-tites? I don't want my coins getting ruined up.
I know that site but have not myself ordered from them. I see nothing to suggest they are disreputable. You might also check out other sites like: Wizard, Valley, JP's Corner, Brent-Krueger amongst others and look for the best deal. Usually, I advise buying in bulk when possible to save money on shipping expense or volume pricing. Also note that the manufacture is running a 30th Anniversary sale of 30% off orders of $30 or more through their site.
but isn't that the point to air-tites? to stop or slow down effects of the environment?? forgive me if i am way off on this, but if air-tites don't work, what purpose do they serve? or do they only work against air, and not wood?
I believe the point is only that even if the AirTite holders do work and are trust worthy, why put the coins in environmental harms way in the case that some or all of the holders fail, when their are more safer environments to store your coins... I mean you obviously care about protecting your coins because you purchased the AirTite holders in the first place. ( Basically, just because I keep my documents in a firesafe, doesn't mean that I am going to store my firesafe in the chimney )
The Eagle pages aren't exactly cheap. Six pages (only) that hold 120 AirTites cost $23. I used to use them, but found that the pages often crack at the holes for the 3-ring binder and along the plastic strip that holds them in place in each slot. If you're budget-minded, like me, you can use the 2x2 boxes that come with Saflips. Each box holds 37 AirTites and takes up a heck of a lot less space than the binders. Shown below, are my casino chips (39mm) in 52mm AirTites with the accent ring. I can store 444 discs (37 per box) in the same space that two binders holding 160 discs will need. Chris
