Unfortunately the big auction houses are not a good place to find coins graded below VF. Since they are illustrated and do not wish to draw attention to facts that will reduce the price, you don't usually see much mention of conditions that are not bad enough to be called defects. The big houses are also not likely to sell coins that grade VG unless the coin is an EID MAR or something similar in demand. Without a photo, the proper grading statement for an ancient coin is somewhere between a sentence and a paragraph.

I just logged-back-onto CT and wanted to thank everyone for discussing so many nuances of ancient grading. :thumb:

You guys may not realize it but you have provided several bits of data that finally allow me to make sense of issues that have been plaguing me for quite awhile. (There are too many to list & I'm a little embarrassed about that).

I look forward to seeing Ardatirion's upcoming thread on proper cataloging.

You know what though? I bet you ten people or more might have had the same confusion as you, but were afraid to ask. This is why I never mind such questions. We usually help more than just the original poster.

    Keep them coming.

Don't be it's the undiscovered country.

i also look forward to this thread- but I feel I might have to rewrite all my flips....again.

I'm not surprised. I've seen your videos. You're going to wear all your coins down to culls. :p

It's not the flips that concern me, it's daunting to think I may want to redo my catalogue.

    stevex6's ruling:

    a) I rub my empresses a lot ....

    or

    b) my empresses rub me a lot ...

=> both are good => tie game!!
