Look at the post of Rhino's and yours that I have quoted above. This is what I am talking about. You guys are treating this like a science project without any regard for the detrimental effect that posting this information could potentially have on the toned coin market. If you guys want toned coins, then go buy them. If you insist upon playing coin doctor, then keep your experiments, procedures, and results to yourselves. You guys are more dangerous than the actual coin doctors. The coin doctors rely on their methods and results to make a living and treat them as valuable trade secrets and will not divulge them. The numismatic community has long regarded AT methods as taboo because it promotes the development of coin doctors, artificially toning, and hurts coin collecting in general. If every fledgling coin doctor is forced to learn completely by themselves, most will give up on their evil plan long before they become successful in creating market acceptable rainbow toned coins that will make it into NGC & PCGS holders. If the med students have access to your AT manuals on the internet, it becomes a group effort and the chances for creating successful new coin doctors increases dramatically. This is not good for anyone, including the coin doctors who rely on premiums generated by toned coins. If too many people possess the expertise to artificially tone coins, the consumer confidence in the TPG's to weed out AT coins will disappear, the toned coin market will collapse, and everybody loses a lot of money.
first of dont assume that you know me, i really dont need to explain myself to you or anyone it our decision on what we do to our coins, as i have mentioned i do not want to use chemicals, heat, electricity or any other such method to acheive my natural toning, i have stated that i have done something with a hard boiled egg but it was ugly and its not something i will continue. if you cant respect my thread and do not want to add your knowledge other than to buy them toned then please dont post, i cant stop you i can only ask.
That is the whole point. I don't know you. You state that your intentions are in the interest of scientific research. Do you know how many fledgling coin doctors have used that as a cover while they secretly perfected their craft. Too many to count I am afraid. First you state that you value my experience and input, but when I give you the truth about what is going on in this thread, you get defensive and ask me to stay out of your thread. I have already stated that I will not do that any further. It makes no difference whether your intentions are good. The simple fact is that the information being discussed in this thread represents a direct threat to the toned coin market which I am heavily invested. There is a unwritten rule in the numismatic community that AT methods are not discussed publicly. As long as you and the others in this thread continue to violate that unwritten rule, I will be here to chastise you for your irresponsible actions. Lastly, in case I haven't made myself clear. I have absolutely no respect for this thread. It should be entitled "how to artificially tone coins long term". Earlier in this thread, another respected member of this forum gave you a warning which you did not understand. What he meant was this thread has the potential to end up badly, and it has!
i agree some of the stuff on here is crazy……..But there are plenty of pretty toned coins to be had on the internet and coin shows
I don't expect these experiments to yield much in the way of results. If one could achieve an attractively toned coin that looked "NT" by coating it with vaseline and sulfur, or baking it in an oven, it would be common knowledge. As Lehigh has pointed out, the coin "doctors" guard their secrets closely, and their techniques are quite sophisticated. I see little potential for these kitchen chemistry experiments to harm the toned coin market. If you have a cleaned, bright coin that you are tired of looking at, stick it in a little envelope, or wrap it in a brown napkin or whatever, and put it away for a few years. It will look different, maybe better, maybe not, but it will always be a cleaned coin. I will not get my knickers in a knot over this. FWIW, I am a "real" doctor and yesterday had 15 minutes to console a patient of mine who had lost his wife and son within 2 days of each other. This stuff is small potatoes, as far as I am concerned. Have fun and enjoy your coins!
i try to learn something i am unfamiliar with, with no "evil" intention and i get blasted, remind me not to attend a numismatic school i wouldnt want to ask the wrong questions . thank you to those that gave me good information i greatly appreciated it. hopefully taking my coins out of the flips and leaving the safe open will help there natural process.
Judging from the responses since my last post and the points brought up about the potential bad effects on the coin market, I'll just keep my results private then and enjoy my own coins however they come out looking. I can see the danger in AT techniques being public, I'll just drop the science-project discussion. Hey, best wishes to everyone regardless of toned or untoned coin collecting, seriously...
Not trying to be rude but the people here are just trying to help.If you want to clean your coins and lose lots of money in the process then nobody is going to stop you. But you cannot undo that.once its cleaned it cleaned. And as far as the previous comments from Paul………I personally do not have the experience or respect here to be calling anybody out so I kept my mouth shut. But it is not a good idea to spread acceptance of that kind of talk in public. Members here have spent large sums of money for that toned coin they couldn't let go.So basically when they see threads like this its like you suggesting that there money be stolen. I personally will always collect toned wether its the "in" thing or not. But of course one day my coins will be sold and I hope they get what I put into them at least. Hopefully you can move past this and realize that they are just trying to help
Joey, we can't even agree on what the terms "cleaning" or "artificial toning" mean numismatically on this forum, nor can they on many others either. Cleaning or conserving? Natural in an old cigar box ( tannic acids mainly) if a person without knowledge put them there inadvertently and they toned, but Artificial if a person with knowledge put them there on purpose and they toned? Wart of a toad, eye of a newt, lock of Elvis's hair... IMO.
theres a right way to clean and a wrong way to clean the coin. I would imagine if somebody is asking should they clean the coin and what should i use to clean it…… they would end up doing it the wrong way.I myself cannot be 100% sure i know how to clean a coin and get it accepted by a TPG. Its just the members here trying to help save somebody some remorse.
Joey, I am not trying to blast you. From the first day that I joined this forum I have been dedicated to educating others about the areas of numismatics that I specialize in. Toned coins is one of those areas. If you think I was harsh, I invite you to start this same thread over on the PCGS forum. The simple fact is that discussing AT methods publicly is taboo. I have tried to explain the reasons but you seem not to care. And yes, the answer to questions about how to clean coins will be "Don't do it". The reason for this is because, 99% of the time, when a collector tries to improve a coin by cleaning it they end up doing more harm than good. You mentioned in one of your posts that you are not looking to AT coins but you don't want to slow the process down either. I am probably the most avid collector of rainbow toned coins on this entire forum. I store all of my raw coins in intercept shield albums and I store my most valuable certified toned coins in intercept shield boxes. You may think you want your coins to tone, but the reality is that most often, toning does not increase the eye appeal of the coin. For every coin that looks like this there are ten that look like this My advice is to do your best to preserve your coins in their current condition. If you really like toned coins, buy ones that you like, and then preserve them in the condition that you bought them.
I appreciate and understand when someone is trying to help out , often from their own experience, and make someone aware that they most likely would damage the coin , rather than make it better. That is very agreeable to me. But if someone says they are aware of that, but want to try something ( Goat spit for example), we should discuss the effects of goat spit if one is so inclined, as probably someone has tried it over the centuries, to hopefully add information and references for that persons desire to clean with goat spit. A person or thread should not be beat up ( not saying this one has) because they want to know any good knowledge on a natural process rather than googling it or trial and error. There are probably at least 100,000+ people who could make anthrax spores in the US, but only 1 or 2 have done so in an antisocial behavior in the last decades ( not counting the Governments Bio-warfare efforts of course) You do know there are reservoirs of spores in the US and Canada soil which could be used. Knowledge doesn't force the holder to use it inappropriately.
Wow.... If your asking how to do it, how can or could it possibly be natural. If you're trying to induce it, it's not natural. If it just so happens, then it's natural. Realistically, you should just watch the nerd video and do that to it. The intent is the same, so what is the difference?
well the cleaning statement was just a metafore i was just using. from other threads i have read and from those thread i learned that it could and most cases does decrease the value. i apologize for my last few comments, im just trying to learn not for "evil" intent just to be educate.
difference is that i ask because i dont know, the safe i have them for all i know may slow down the natural process. wanting them to tone doesn't make it un-natural.
