This apparently true to some extent. I've tried to get such coins to go back to normal with very little success. I've tried distilled water, warn distilled water and even boiled. Dipped in Lemon Juice, Vinegar, Tamato paste, molases, Acetone, Laquer thinner and many other solutions. Naturally on coins of little value. Walmart now sells several different types of jewlery cleaners and that should be my next experiments with darkened Nickels.
    Tarn-X also has little effects.
