I'm looking through my older stuff and found something I won at a coin club in the mid 80's as a young punk kid.

    How old are these slabs?

Your specific holder would be this:

    PCGS 2 [Sample Slab]

Known as the “rattler” holder, the early PCGS holders were used from 1986-1989 and are still seen sometimes today. This sample was given out at most of the shows during this time period to acquaint collectors with their slab.

Thank you for this post and the prior two. All three are a wealth of info!

This holder is number PCGS-010-1-3 in the Sample Slabs book, where it has a catalog value of $20. This is a good sample with which to start a sample collection, because it is easy to find and inexpensive, but interesting because of its older design.
