I'm sorry for some reason I thought the coin in question was a dime on a cent . Not a common cent on a dime. Totally read this thread wrong .

I'd go no more then $800 in the "no name" holder.

As has been stated in this thread, these double denomination errors are not particularly rare amongst the Lincoln & Roosevelt series and run in the $1K range. However, I wouldn't buy any error coin that is not in either PCGS or NGC plastic. So my answer is $0 and would probably remain so even if the coin were graded by a reputable TPG. If I were an error collector, I would be much more interested in a really rare double denomination "penny on dime".

And that price sounds about right to me.

I'm sorry if I seemed short on that post. I'm simply implying all the drama that surfaces with members and the owner of the coin when the videos and pics come into some threads. It's uncalled for and I'm not a fan of seeing all the tomatoes being thrown at the coin because the owner has an affection to it. Nothing wrong with that. The piece is not for everyone, so therefore the influx of lowball estimates.

Nor should the other members of this forum have to endure the relentless spamming of this forum by the owner who posts the coin at every turn. YOu say uncalled for, I say deserved!

Continuous endless spamming aside, I have to look at it as it's probably the only coin/object the owner has a lot of pride for. I can thank my wife for turning me into a caring wimp sometimes, I didn't used to be this easy.

I'm not a buyer of this type of coin but I really like it. When it was first being shown here I thought $600-$800. After seeing several others over time, I feel it would bring $1200-$1400 in a real auction.

Does a double denomination coin like the one in question have any real face value?

Always kind of think of these as made for profit errors. Mint employees make then, then steal and smuggler then out, to sell to a dealer. Not the kind of thing I want to be party to.

A few months ago, I purchased my brother-in-laws coin collection. Included in the collection was a 1950 dime with a wheat cent reverse. I assumed that it was a fake coin that was created by someone for kicks. If the mint created such error coins, how can I tell if it is genuine or not?

Send it to a TPG to get it authenticated, if it's really convincing.

But usually such coins are fake, used by amateur magicians, as you guessed.

It's one thing for a dime planchet to be struck by cent dies. You can imagine such an error happening...wrong planchet in stuck the hopper, e.g. But the likelihood of a dime obverse die to be mated with a cent reverse die (a mule) is much rarer. Not unheard of. There are some famous ones, like the Sacagawea dollar with the Washington state obverse.

Certified mules can go for big money.

Redwin's probably had a heart attack by now... Just kidding, he should've had one when he first posted the picture of that coin and the price and gotten appraisals.
